Overhauling a Philips cd303 power supply. Replacing the capacitors in the power supply, many are quite low. Especially the 100uf ones. Question: I have some 33uf 25v tantalum capacitors( Kemet) that I was going to use in place of the 33uf 16v Aluminum capacitors that were standard. Is there anything I should be concerned with before I install them, apart from polarity, etc.
Mainly, you should be concerned that tantalum caps are terrible for sonic performance, whether in signal path or supply lines. As for deciding which caps to replace, you need not do any measurements. If a cap is already a Nichicon, which Philips used a lot of, it will be good. If it ain't a Nichicon already, replace it with one, because any other brand Philips used, especially their own, will be either bad or going bad.
I replaced the majority of them with Panasonic or Elna Red caps, but had some 33uf 25v tantalums that I wanted to put to use if it made sense. I have read the Tantalums last a long time and don't suffer from drying up, etc.
since you said they're dried out, just change them.tantalums has polarity afaik.there's small "+" with thick line if i'm not wrong..
and let's see if you like it or not..you could change it again anytime when you feels they makes your CD sounds bad 🙂
i used tantalum mixed w/ oscon in my DAC and from my thought, they sounds pretty good in my DAC 🙂 .give a try if you have time.
and yes they didn't dried out since they're not an electrolyt 😀

I would not use them across a power rail as I have seen them fail short circuit and burn a hole through the PCB.
