Philips CD-880 playing speed problem

Hi,

My Philips CD-880 playing speed is erratic. The speed it is more like holding the fast forward button. This is just by click on the play button and play the CD normally. It plays faster on its own.

On top of that, I also noticed the fast forward and fast backward buttons seem not respond or function well.

Are these issues related and am I able to fix it myself with the help of your insight? I really appreciate your thoughts!

Thanks,

Seems the problems are related due to optical pickup, spindle servo, or control logic problem.

First, confirm that the disc is loaded correctly and that the lens is clean.

Check for bad connections and cracks in any printed flexible cables to the optical deck as well. Clean and reseat connectors just to be sure.

Firstly, I must say...It's a possibility that you may have to take it to a tech for readjustment.

Do not make any adjustments yourself as you can make things worse!

It's also likely a control issue, the upper bushing in the spindle motor is likely worn, or the commutator brushes are bad. A worn upper bushing leads to disc wobble. The spindle motor servo can't get a good feedback signal from the disc and it starts to hunt. Similarly, if the brushes are worn and making poor contact, the motor does not respond properly to the drive and the servo starts to send full drive signals to the motor to get it going, only to end up with the disc spinning flat out.
In the CD players I've experienced with these spindle motor-related problems, the added noise is this on and off drive torque hitting the motor

Thanks StewartH83!
When it plays normal, it sounds normal. When it plays fast, it sounds just like hitting the fastforward button. I was thinking about replacing all the capacitors myself first. I guess that won't help based on your professional experience. Not sure where I can find a reliable professional to look at this issue here in NJ/NY area.

So does it speed up at random? Certain discs or times? Does it do it shortly after turning the unit on or totally unpredictable?

You could try lubricating the spinal motor for a temporary fix, if it plays normally for a while then returns, replace the motor.

I only use 100% synthetic bearing lubricant, you can find some under typewriting bearing liquid too. Use it sparingly though, not too much and not too little. Try a little bit at a time. You only may be able to lubricate the top bearings easily yet that would only be a short-term fix.

If that makes no difference you have a deeper issue.

I think you could find a tech around there, even on this site. Of course, DIY comes first
