Peerless xxls-12

I just built a sealed 12" subwoofer and I plan on building a second one sometime soon. I will use a Peerless xxls-12 at 4ohms and a Hypex ds4.0 amplifier. my intention is to build a clone SVS sb12-nsd, SVS was able to get a freq range of 23-270Hz using a sealed enclosure a little over 1ft3 with bracing and a 400w power amp. using winisd, in a 1.9ft3 sealed enclosure f3 is 39.97 and f6 is 31Hz, the Hypex amp has an EQ and a subsonic filter. would I be able to EQ the sub down to 20-22Hz with an active filter without damaging the driver, or should I just build a 4ft3 ported enclosure with 2 3" ported tuned to 22Hz?

Hi,

WinISD just does the basic maths, based on Fs, Qts and Vas.

Real boxes are more complicated, Unibox is your best free bet.

Bass management completely changes the rules when
it comes to subs and is unfortunately impossible to clone
with simple DIY stuff, the SVS will simply not be flat to
23Hz at high levels, though it might be at low levels.

Against that bass management is not hifi,
but in AV terms it works extremely well.

FWIW an Eminence LAB12 in a 100L box tuned to
about 20Hz with a big flared port and a Bash 300W
amplifier is my idea of a good value subwoofer.

rgds, sreten.

SVS uses EQ to boost the low end response.

However, I don't think it is worth building a SB12-NSD clone. You wouldn't be able to save much money compared to just buying it at the $599 price. It is $245 for the driver, $250 for a good plate amp, and $50 for a cabinet, so you end up saving $50. I think SVS's support, warranty, and the time saved from not having to buildi it is well worth $50.

I havent bought the amp yet. its available through madisound.com for around $400, maybe they will ship to CA. I cant figure out why SVS chose such a small sealed enclosure at 1.2ft3 when a qtc of .70 is closer to 2ft3 sealed. I estimated an internal vol of 1.6-1.8ft3 would give a good LF extension and enough headroom for 400w and +4db at 24hz. I came across the Goldenear FF 4 last weekend for about the same amount as this DIY project with a reported range of 14hz-250hz. has anyone had a chance to listen to this sub?

peerless xxls12

I downloaded winISD pro and +4db @ 24hz will overdrive the peerless xxls12 pretty quick. +2db @ 34hz in a sealed enclosure I was able to keep the driver below 13mm excursion. I was happy to get down to 27hz at -6db with 400w. mind you this was on paper but it sounds pretty promising. even unibox recommended a sealed enclosure more than 1.5ft3, I dont know what SVS was thinking with 1ft3 it seems counter intuitive for extended LF. I have read corner loading a subwoofer will give a +4db boost across the entire freq range is there any truth behind this?

and as far as the eminence lab12, I was interested in getting a lab12c for my other sealed project. RMS is 500w and it will match my bash 500w amp just fine in a 1.8ft sealed enclosure. is it rated at 4ohms b/c its a car subwoofer or will it work well in home audio applications?
