PCM61 vs PCM56

Can I use PCM61 (18bit) instead of PCM56 (16bit), if i use CS8412 in mode 6 instead of mode 5 (and the source still is 44KHz/16bit)?

Do I have any benefit (sound and distortion at the lowest level), even if the 17th and 18th bit will be set to zero?

Maybe that if the chip PCM61 can work with 18 bit, it is internally better trimmed inside to reproduce the 16th bit than the PCM56. 😕

I was using pcm56 in nos mode with i2s input > glue logic. While trying to remove dacs from pcb I destroyed one of them, couldn't find replacement original pcm56 and used pcm61 instead of pcm56 and modified logic for 18bit.

As for the sound, I think pcm56 sounds better than pcm61.. Maybe it is my imagination, but pcm61 sounds more forward sounding than pcm56.

But it may not. A DIYA member Bernhard showed PCM56 are the best of audio multibit DAC chips since PCM63P.
New DAC measurement

I also roughly measured PCM56, PCM58, and AD1860 (trimmed all of them) and some pieces of PCM56 were better than others at low level signal.
It was not happy because I liked PCM58 which have 4 trim pins and lower noise spec.

Ygg-it, sorry to hijack your thread....

@Shinja - what is your conclusion about PCM58? How did you implement it? What digital filters did you try?
I have 8 of them and plan to use them in conjunction with a DF1706 in balanced/parallel topology.
Thanks!
