i just purchased a pc power supply to power my fans. But i dont understand how to power it up. I connected the fan via 3-4 pin power adapter to the power supply. then i plugged in the power supply, but nothing happens.
what am i missing? Ive done several searches but i didnt get any specific info.

you might have a power supply that needs a motherboard to turn it on. i bought a really old one that has a switch.

take a look at the green cable !
sometimes there is a safety interlock, sometimes the power supply needs a minimal load to function. The instruction sheet will tell.

get an old baby AT psu. They will power up and run fans without the need of a motherboard. they are also cheap and you might find someone at a computer repair place that will give you an old one because no one uses thes psu's anymore.
I think your current problem is that you have a newer ATX power supply and they usualy require the motherboad to power them up.

I miss the good old days of AT when you could power off 5 computers at the same time, and building a pc was cheaper than buying on prebuilt, and we loved to get that extra 50 mhz 🙂 .
Yeah , thats it! Its an ATX power supply. So i guess ill have to search for a different power supply. Thanks alot guys, i was stumped!🙂
actually, if you cross pin 14 an 15, the power supply will turn on, but this can damage it. You need to do it with transistor transistor logic circuitry.
If you want to power fans, go to radio shack and buy a 110v to 12 volt transformer. They are cheap and much smaller.
