passive horn for your phone

I do this quite a bit. Here's how I do it:

1) get a waveguide. I use the QSC waveguide from Parts Express, pictured above
2) get a C-clamp and clamp the phone to the waveguide
3) enjoy!

On the downside, I over clamped it one time and it broke the glass on my Google Nexus 4. So be careful 🙂

It sounds surprisingly good. Our phones have a single full range driver, so horn loading the whole thing is a way to eliminate the issues inherent in two-way speakers. I mostly horn load my phone when I'm working in the garage, and in some respects it sounds better than my JBL Control Nows (which are what I normally use in the garage.)

Basically the horn loaded cel phone is more intelligible, and the SPL level is quite respectable, because we're getting about 10dB of gain from the horn. (I'm guessing the speaker is probably about 65dB efficient, with a ten watt amp or so. So horn loading gets you from 75dB to 85dB, not a bad deal.)

Note - I just looked at my Google Nexus 5, and it looks like they went from a mono speaker to a stereo speaker, so that complicates things quite a bit. Why would anyone need stereo speakers from a cel phone? Are you going to put your head in between the 2cm gap? 😛

This Koostik thing is rather nice actually!

hidden in the box are horn ducts wit some kind of connecting resonator, propably to boost low frequencies. I wonder if it really works but it can easlily be blocked.

A very nice idea for a diy audio Christmas present!
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Pano's drinking class gives a typical honking horn👍 sound! I found that my Samsung mono souds best on a salad bowl Width determines lowest boost F and depth determines gain!
