What's the best type of paint to use on a metal amp chassis? That is, the best reasonably priced stuff; i.e., as found at Home Depot.
You probably won't find it at Home Depot, but automotive paint is probably the toughest and most durable. check for a paint dealer that carries this kind and buy a few cans. You will need primer, very fine grit wet&dry sand paper and lots of elbow grase. Plan on several coats. A heat lamp or two can speed up the drying. I helped someone do a custom mod on their PC case. If I were to paint an amp enclosure, I would take the same approach.
Pooge what kind of material is the case constructed out of?
aluminum and steel have different reaction to enamals or laquers. thus saying that different primers are needed to avoid a reaction to the element being painted...your success to a good paint job is the prep work......a non solvent based cleaner is the key to remove any residual oil from the material...acetone is a cheap cleaner for example....as far as paint goes pick a good brand....nozzle is the key...some have an adjustment for the type of spray
spray always with the piece vertical because you will drip onto it and use multiple staggered coats and wet sands between dry times are nice if you want a automotive finish

Anything that comes in a can is going to be marginal at best. Even if the paint is good quality, the little spray nozzles never deliver evenly enough for even a semi-professional look. Unless you have a compressor and a paint gun, you really won't get a good coat. If you have air, then you already know that duPont Imron is one of the best and also one of the most dangerous to use. In general, good paint is also extremely toxic.
My advice is to find a local powder-coat company and get them to throw your case in with another customer's batch. You may have to wait to get the exact colour you want, but it will be worth it. If all you want is black, it's likely that they can add your job just about any time.

I have painted with a gun, painted with cans and sent out for powder. I have to use some really expensive stuff to beat the powder.
A lot of these powder guys will add in something small for a bit of secret lunch money or some other kind of trade (like blowing away their car stereo with a cheapo component 13.8VDC gainclone).

Hello, I work at a company where we also do powder coating. An advice take care of the spots where components must be earthed. There you must attached a kind of paper-based sticker which can be removed after the oven. Same for the '' contact-points'' between several points ot the enclosure. If you will count all the expenses for doing it yourself and a lot of times you will buy to much paint that can be thrown away later. IT IS REALLY TIME_ CONSUMING TO DO IT YOURSELF.No one to blame if you mess it up like a lot people do. It is a lot of work to change a colour so you can tell the company to give you a sign when they will do your favorite one again. If you would live in Holland i would give you the adress of a company that is usually painting 7 colours at the same time. Our company will just do one at a time but the thing we really do it the metalwork. Finishing for us is just a small thing. Consult the yellow pages. Succes, Ed
