Although the plan is far away from completion, I'm already dedicated in planning it all out. So here goes!
Planning on building a fully horn loaded PA set, with the capability to serve as a set for impressive outdoor cinema. As always: overkill is the priority 😉 . At the moment I have in my possession the following gear: 8x Klipsch LaScala bass bins (with the much more powerful 450W Eminence Kappa 15C woofers) with 8x Faital HF200 drivers on a few different horns (also planning on upgrading at least a few to the mighty K402 horns). I also got 2x horn loaded PA subs (35-100hz 1000W 105db/1spl) and 2x sealed 2000W Sundown Audio ZV4 18D2 subs.
At the moment I'm using this all in my humble stead (which is an appartement lol), but I'm hoping to all move it to a storage facility so I can easily move it to use as a full blown PA/outdoor cinema set. I'm planning all steps to be able to do this, and this also gives me the opportunity to go for something I always wanted: big bad *** horn loaded subs which dig low. I'm just not sure which ones...
I'm thinking about:
Gjallerhorn: this one has a driver I cant get my hands on.. does somebody maybe know which other (availble) drivers are compatible with this sub?
Othorn: I know where I can find this driver, but it doesnt dig as deep as the Gjallerhorn.
BillFitzMaurice's THT sub: very cheap, so I could probably build 4x or more of them instead of a pair of Ot/Gjallerhorns.
What should the SPL goal be that I should aim for, if I'd want to impress the socks of everyone in an outdoor situation (down to 15-20hz)? Dont hold back your opinions if you think this is impossible/probable to pull of!
Thanks
Maarten

I believe THX standard is 105db at listening position down to 20 hz. Given the lack of room gain a large bill. The Sundowns should be able to fill in thr bottom octave nicely, 15 to 30 hz. Though if you plan on using a trailer to haul it may make a nice plenum for a trw 17 which would probably be able to do 105 db at 5 hz as well.
Also:BillFitzMaurice's THT sub: very cheap, so I could probably build 4x or more of them instead of a pair of Ot/Gjallerhorns.
1) Clustering horns is good. Clustering 4 is better than clustering 2.
2) The Gjallerhorns get leet performance by pouring massive power into an OTT driver. If you can get equivalent SPL from a larger number of cheaper drivers, you might save $ in amp and generator requirements.
How big is your intended audience?
Could you immerse the audience in the subs - e.g. build multiples of the BillFitzMaurice sub in the low profile variant, and use them as seats? If so, the proximity would make up for lack of room gain.
I intend to do something kinda like this: horn >60Hz and (near field) direct radiator <60Hz. The difference in proximity will balance the difference in efficiency.
