Anyone have any experience replacing the transistors in the power supply of a 1st generation Orion HCCA 225? If so what did you replace them with? The devices in the amp are SJE2889, a proprietary device made specifically for Orion by Motorola years ago. OnSemi bought the line from Motorola and they are unwilling to divulge any info on them.

Are you sure it's first generation? I used to repair Orion amps while I was in college and the early generation of amps all used 2N6488/2N6491 in the power supply and output stages.
I know later on they changed the power supply to MOSFET but I never worked on those.

i have the second gen of this amp,and i`ll try in the next day or so to look to see what it has in it maybe that can help you some.

Orion 225 HCCA power supply
Yep Maxhawk, it's a 1st gen., an early one. I have later 1st generation HCCA's and they are as you state with 2N6488 in the power supply and 2N6488/2N6491 in the amp output. The 2nd gen. uses SMP60N05 and SMP60N06 mosfets in the power supply but still used the 2N6488/2N6491 amp outputs.
It is a small world we live in - both named Rob, live in Ga., and work on Orion amps. Hmmm, am I talking to myself, hehehe.
Offroadbum, I appreciate your offer to help but I know that the 2nd gen. Orion uses mosfets as I stated above. You are absolutlely right about these amps. They were among the best made in their era. Orion makes a joke out of them now. I would copy and paste the email DEI sent me about the part I'm looking for but it made me mad so I deleted it. They basically said the old amps are @$#&* and the new ones are far superior and that I should hang the old Orion on the wall for a decoration and get a new one.
I will paste the emails I got from Freescale(Motorola) and OnSemi about the part in question. Motorola manufactured the device.

This series of devices marked with an SJE prefix were devices manufactured by Motorola for a specific customer to their specifications. This device is a proprietary device. Information and procurement of proprietary devices is only available through the company for whom it was manufactured. If you have taken the device from a piece of equipment, please contact the equipment manufacturer for assistance.
Also, the product line the SJE2889 was sourced from was sold by Motorola to On Semiconductor several years ago. All documentation, engineers, etc., for this product line transferred to On Semi. If you need further assistance in regard to SJE2889, they may be able to assist and can be reached at:

Thank you for all of the information in this post, I also have a 1st gen HCCA 225 amp that is broken. With the details that you provided around the transistors used in the power supply i was able to fix it.
So in summary, i replaced the SJE2889 in the power supply section with the 2N6488 and my amp worked after that. In my amp, the input and output large electrolytic capacitors all failed. I beleive that the capacitors failed due to the high temp that these amps get to.

Orion amp repair
I'm glad this was of assistance. I've repaired several Orion amp power supplies since this post, all with 2N6488's.
I am still running Orion in one of my cars, an HCCA250 on 3 - 10's in parallel. I also have an HCCA225 that's not installed, just waiting for the moment.
