Optical cable and damage?

I have a 5m optical toslink from my media player to my DAC, the DAC seemed to stop receiving the signal yesterday. The red light is good and strong from the receiving end, which led me to assume that the fault was with the DAC, but when I moved things around and tried with a 1m lead the Dac functioned perfectly.

Are there issues with partially compromised optical cables? I assumed that if the light was evident the signal would be transmitted without any compromise.

Any thoughts, similar experiences?

Many thanks in advance for help with a small problem.
