Hello all, first post here, been lurking here for some time now and i might say it has been interesting but more so kind of overwhelming since i'm just a novice at all this stuff, and that at my age (41 now, getting old 🙂) so let me start by thanking all participants of this site.
Anyway, i sort of like buying all kinds of stuff if on the cheap and today i found this, a onkyo dx-100, seems to work allright only skips easy and sometimes has a real hard time keeping playing. The idea is cleaning it and give it some lube but for now the transport doesn't look anything that i have seen before so, it comes out as a whole when opening the cd tray, need to gather some nerve before i try. Noticed that it goes better (it didn't skip during play) with the lid off, don't get that 🙂
Another thing i found was that the dac seems different from the dac/ transport list, maybe early model?
Thought of posting it here as it seems there is about nill info on the net on this thing and that while it looks to be a pretty decent apparatus, maybe not so easy to mod like the cd104 perhaps (?)

sorry to say ur probably not in luck. if it skips it is almost certainly in the laser assembly for the transport. you may be able to download the service manual and run through the adjustments of the levels (if any) on the main board. Also there is an output level on the laser assembly itself. BUT screwing up these settings will make it nonfunctional or blow out the laser.
Others may be able to advise on the setup procedure in general for transports, I have never found the required CD to permit the proper pattern to be displayed on the scope... but then you'd have to have a scope.
Probably ur better off with a cheap new DVD player or something like that, than this very old player...

Hi bear, tnx although not being the bringer of good news indeed. I did find the service manual and your right about the scope, haven't got one. (yet)
I might make it into a practice project then. I'ts not that i'm without players, i have about 10 of them but reading the cd104 thread got me interested in the old ones and this one being the first from onkyo (so i read somewhere anyway) i had some hopes for it being indistructable, sure is heavy enough tho not as heavy as the 104.
I was under the impression that if it played cdr's (witch it does) the laser might be ok and a good lube and perhaps some new elco's in the power supply could bring it back on track...

Skipping almost NEVER indicates bad laser in older players. Especially not this one. More than likely, there is simply a mechanical tracking sled problem, either dried/hardened lubricant, a cracked gear, weak belt if used, or in rare cases carbon build-up in the tracking drive motor. I know I have worked on this mech more than once, but it's been too long to recall it's specifics. About the only other likely cause is carbon build-up in the platter motor, causing bumping of the disc, but this usually doesn't happen with magnetic clamper types like this.
Any Red Book CD (i.e. any normal music disc) will always give the same "pattern" as any other when viewed on a scope. You don't need any special discs for general alignment but you must have a scope. Don't just twiddle in hope.

Yes, today i managed to take another look and i could open up the underside of the transport, there i cleaned and lubed the iron bar witch i guess is the rail for the laser. Cleaned the laser also but as i understand there are 2 sides to a lens (who could have guessed 🙄) and i didn't get to the underside. All this didn't help. Also did what you just said not to do, i.e. looked in the manual for the pots involved and just tried to adjust a bit freehand but that didn't seem to help as well so put them back in (sort of) original place.
For now it will play no problem and takes everything i throw at it, normal cd, 650 mb cdr and 700 mb cdr. Also gave it a well scratched cd and obviously it skipped but kept playing. Track searching seems to go allright and fast enough. It's only when i tap the case for example that it skips to easy for my liking.

Also, can anyone tell me where I can find replacement belts if needed?

CPC for belts, such search the site for "audio belts". You will have to measure yours first and check whether round or square cross section.

Do you re-grease the slides including the laser slide too? Also, where is best to grease the cogs? Is it directly on the teeth or to each side of the teeth?

A little grease anywhere there is physical contact for the slides. It only needs a smear. The cogs (generally) I would remove and wash in ISO or whatever and run a piece of card through the teeth to get any old stuff out. Then just a few minute dabs of grease at say 40 degree intervals around the cog and let it naturally work its way around as the player is in use.
