ok, i'm ready to make a projector

i'm a total newb to diy projection. however, i'm very intrigued, and hoping to create my own projector. I want it to be mounted on my ceiling so a smallish size would be nice, but isn't totally critical, i'm hoping to be able to project onto an 6' or so screen, and i'm also looking to be able to run 720p.

I'm wondering if an XGA panel will be capable of this? ik 720p is 1280x720 and xga is 1024x768 however 720p is widescreen? also, if xga won't cut it then i'm wondering if i can get a 15" or less 1280x1024 screen? I know my dad's laptop can do 1600x1200 but the response time is in the crapper. I'm thinking the cmv1515 or 1512 if i go w/ an xga screen.

also, what projector lenses would you recommend? i know nothing about them really except to go for the triplet design. also, what kinds of fresnell lenses will i be needing for my setup? I"m hoping to keep it as compact as possible, so how far apart will the bulb have to be from the lenses? also do you think i'll need any uv or cold filtering? i know metal hidrite is the best kind of bulb, i'm wondering what wattage to go for. i'd prefer to be able to use this setup in partial light conditions for videogaming with friends.

has anyone considered ordering a custom enclosure from a plastic company? i've seen people order custom cut acrylic for computer cases, just a thought, i'll prolly have mine mounted in my ceiling or in a wooden case to match it.

whew, ik i'm asking a lot, but the members of this board seem to be very helpful so thanks in advance!

p.s. almost forgot, where can i pick up a good power supply for all of this? i've got a 350 watt raidmax computer powersupply sitting around....😉

hi thestranger

as i did ,you are asking questions that have asked, and asked, and asked again on this forum so maybe no one will answer
the answers you are looking for are on the forum
like verbose mustapha said one time (please visit his website)
first search, then post or go to the wiki webpage
but that's what i've learn

the fresnel size must be bigger than your lcd and its fl lenght the same as your screen size ((7" lcd =7" fl lenght)
if you want a compact setup ,don't go with a 15 "(if you want a pretty girl, do you choose a 120 kgs?)
good luck

bye

I'm using the CMV 1512 in my projector, i'm not done building it yet but I'm using the 12.2" fresnel lens from DIYLABS, the 250w metal halide HQI (the reflector is either going to be the stainless steel ice cream scoop or a reflecor I just got from a camera parts shop, whichever works the best). I'm also using the triplet lens from DIYLABS, which I hear brings great results.

If you want your setup to last, use light filters to reduce the heat. I just bought heat absorbing glass, a UV camera filter, and a polarizing camera filter from a local camera shop. I might not use all of them, considering the light loss but I'm going to experiment with different combinations for the best results of heat reduction vs. light output ratio.

As for the power supply, I'd keep it simple and keep everything AC voltage. Radio shack has some nice AC fans that look like computer case fans, but they're a little bigger (I'm not sure how noisy they are but on the box it says 65db). If you want to use computer case fans, just buy a AC to 12VDC converter, strip the wires, and make sure the AMP rating on the converter is more than the total AMPS that your fans will be sucking.

I'm placing my fans at the back of my unit where my light source is towards the top (heat rises) and cutting holes in the bottom of the enclosure between the LCD and the triplet lens, with air filters in the holes. Make sure that the total area of your intake holes is a little bit bigger than the area where your fans blow the hot air out.

I'm pretty sure the X2VGA by KeyDigital (for the Xbox) can display a 720p image on a XGA monitor, as well as 1080i (I think I read somewhere that for 1080i it just uses 540p instead).

As for the case, I'm pretty sure you have to bulk order custom cases, otherwise they're a pretty penny individually. Also, if plastic is used, make sure it can stand the heat of your light source. I'm using particle board for my enclosure. look at Brainchild's setup, he's using the CMV1515. my enclosure is going to be about the same shape as his, only my light source is smaller so I might be able to get away with a smaller enclosure.

Hope this helps.

thanks vanhanz, i'm thinking i might purchase everythign except the cmv1515 and buy a broken laptop, strip it's lcd and use it as a proof of concept (my dad wants to make sure this will work before he sinks 300 bucks into an lcd) seems to me this'll work fine as long as i get large enough fresnells for the 15"....idk tell me if i'm wrong, thanks again

I have the X2VGA and it's really great!

Don't know if it can display 720p on XGA monitors though, because I've only connected it with my CRT monitor wich can go pretty much higher then that. Although I think i got 480p on my 640*480 LCD panel but it's been such a long time I've even had my DIYprojector turned on. It seems or I should say FEELS that my package from DIYlabs got lost on the way here :bawling:

Anyway! In closing comments:

X2VGA = AWESOME

Shipping from that place = 5 days to Sweden (Awesome)

And I guess that's all you need to know.

Oh and one more thing for you guys who's got a modded xdude!!

How do I make my emulator games (snes, nes, neogeo and so on) to display in progressive??!
