After a few unproductive hours yesterday trying to find the problem
in a DAC kit I'm building, I decided to just put things away, and
listen to some light music to relax.
Played a couple of discs and felt better. The third was playing when
I went to the basement for a few minutes. Upon my return I
noticed one speaker was quiet; the left channel of the amp is gone.
🙁 🙁 🙁
Perhaps this is all a sign that I should just buy the Oppo 105 and
Pass XA-30.5 and call it a day.

I was building an FDA-1 DAC (one of Spencer's kits I bought a few years ago).
I'm not quite ready to throw in the towel yet and I'll probably look at the
DAC and the amp in a couple of weeks.

Can't say enough about the oppo. I just have the small one. For CD's, I sill prefer my old Rotel though. Over this weekend, testing everything after my crossover failed, my Rotel AVR and two of my Parasounds are just so old they are seriously noisy and need of a recap. I was not planning on spending any money on that system this year. I wanted to finish my amp design. Nice heat sink in the Rotel though. Every problem can help fix another. Hmmm... Nice set of outputs too. 10 pairs. Recycle time. Things to think about looking at 7 inches of snow and still falling.

We are fearless amplifier builders. A little heat doesn't scare us at all.

Oh...did I mention that the hot soldering iron fell out of its stand and landed on my hand?
🙂
The Oppo is probably just a matter of time. My Marantz CD63SE is almost 20 years
old.
The broken amp is a hafler. Not too much heat. 🙂 Will attempt to fix it.

Which Hafler? 200?
I think the output FETs still show up on ebay occasionally.
I picked up two consoles this weekend. (1) RCA three channel, L, R, Bass, and (2) Magnavox 199 chassis unit.
Someone worked on the 199 in the past and replaced several components. I reworked all of the caps and several resistors to get it working. TIt looks like it has a blown output transformer.
The RCA looks like it went through a flood and I'm afraid to even try to power it up at this point.
I was hoping to get one working to take to my daughter this week. Not going to happen.

It's a Hafler 9300 about 20 years old. It's been in storage for a while, and
I've only recently put it back in my amp rotation.

If it works first time then you havent learned anything and it is also boring.
I recently got into SMPS and have had mosfets blowing and flying across the room.
It usually comes down to me not quite understanding what I am doing.
A little knowledge is dangerous !
With a bit of help from DIYAUDIO I usually get things working OK.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

> Screwdriver Electric uses sharp tip
> It's super effective

Never a good idea to screw with parents nearby - as my son discovered a few years back 😉 - and I was outside running the lawn mower- ah the enthusiasm of youth
Small tears/ perforations in foam or butyl rubber surrounds can often be effectively repaired. Can you take photo(s) of damage to spider?
