Basically, I just got a pair of ESS Heils off ebay, and wanted to run some tests and then use them with an active crossover, and I really wouldn't want to burn them...
My question is: how easy are they to burn? I gather I could use them with a cap for testing, to protect them from DC and excess low freq levels.. What would be a good cap value??
Then, if I use them with an active crossover, a cap would introduce an unwanted phase shift, maybe I can just use a fuse or something?

The value of the cap depends upon the crossover point. It might make sense to incorporate it as a separate pole within your active filter. That way, you can use the smallest cap value- cheapest, smallest, most protection.
So if your active filter's 4th order, you change it to 3rd and add the cap speaker level to complete the filter.
If you don't want to do this, 40uF ought to be about right balance between low interaction and protection.
