I went and made this out of sheer curiosity- nola brio clone with frugel horn enclosure for the bottom unit, no sub, same crossover as brio- 20uf up top and 4(?)uh inductor in the bottom (i forget the value for the inductor. Will dig up the thread)
As expected no usable bass below 60hz but everything above was top notch. The 2 units sound like 1 driver, and miles better than how tc9fd18 sounds alone. I might add a bass unit and turn it into a 3way
Couple questions tho-
Could this be replicated with any 8inch FR with same crossover?
If so what fr would u recommend that is budget priced?
Could it be considered transient perfect as it is now?

Forgive my brevity as it's about 0030 here and I'm going boss-eyed with insomnia. Re your 3 points, in order
-Depends on the driver but almost certainly not. Not if you're targeting precisely the same results at least, although if carefully chosen for impedance & FR you might get similar transfer functions. Note that an 8in driver will not actually fit in the Frugel Horn; you could keep that & have an 8in as the mid-tweet, but it might look a bit odd running a 4in for the LF & an 8in for the mids & HF.
-Depends how you define 'budget priced' (?)
-Probably not, but I wouldn't worry too much on that front as it's a trifle ephemeral in most circumstances.

I doubt the TC9 will give meaningful bass in a frugelhorn. And at 3" , I doubt you'll get anything better than 55Hz and not much intensity down low.
If you switch to an 8" below and the TC9 above, then it becomes a FAST, and will not perform as the Brio does.

Insomnia is a regular guest over here... not fun.
Sorry, I meant 8inchers top and bottom
You mean the same 8" FR up and down?
Then, you will be shifting your problem from the lack of low end to the lack of top end.
Most 8" drivers will fall abruptly after 15kHz, and they will beam at around 3-4kHz, which means they will lose top end quickly when listened off axis.
If you want to keep the same look with both drivers, use an 8" woofer (or even a subwoofer) in a vented or TL low end enclosure, and a FR 8" on top.
Or use an 8" vented to TL enclosure with a smaller 3-4" FR driver above and turn your project into a FAST. Best of both world.
Of course, if you want to keep the looks of the Brio, just hide a sub somewhere in your room and you get your low end with the diminutive looks of the Brio.
