Got a nice pre-amp with a noisy Alps (genuine) 3511 50KKX2 in it...
Anyone know a way of opening & dusting it, or is a new one the way to go?
If the answer is to replace, any suggestions for suppliers that are not selling fakes (I wouldn't trust eBay). Ideally, an identical part would be good as its in a classic amp...

You either have a worn out pot OR if your amp is capacitively coupled, you are getting some leakage through the cap. It looks like you have a 50k pot. It only takes a few uA to cause scratching. Do you have a circuit you can share with us, so we can give some more detialed advice?
For Alps pots, I'd start looking at Farnell, RS or one of those local guys in the UK. But, before spending on a new pot, check out the coupling caps.

Its the pot, not capacitive coupling as the balance pot that follows directly on does not cause the same problems. You either have a worn out pot OR if your amp is capacitively coupled, you are getting some leakage through the cap. I presume is a log pot as the part # was pre-RoHS and I can't find a cross-reference to current ALPS models (amp dates from about 1983 - its a Perreaux SM2).
