The 1970's was a great decade where it was possible for rock instrumentals to make it to a mainstream audience. There are also countless excellent instrumentals out there that are either very obscure, or only had any popularity in their native country.
Excellent albums with instrumentals are still being made today. They are just not going to be on any major label.

I'm going to nominate Jeff Beck's "Because We've Ended As Loves" from the "Blow By Blow" album.
wow, you guys are throwing out some smoking stuff!
thanks for sharing.
the keyboard players of the 70s are awe inspiring - one hand on each keyboard and one foot on the moog keyboard bass while their head is completely turned to face the other band members to stay in sync and THEY NEVER MISS A FREAKING NOTE!
you're right EdGr; they don't.

Then Emerson, Lake & Palmer don't qualify?I will say that featuring an electric guitar qualifies as rock.

There are some great songs in this thread!
I think "nice rock instrumentals" have:
The recipe is somewhat like the 1980s Heavy Metal Power Ballads minus the lyrics.

Well if you include keyboard players, there's the theme to weekend world, and the theme to world in action.
