Newbie needs help on mic

Hi everyone!

I recently bought the Panasonic WM60-AT electret mic capsule from Digikey (they are small 😛 ) and found some information about cutting the traces to access the source of the internal FET.

How different would it be between putting a resistor there and using the mic as it is (except for balanced output).

BTW, how do I go about wiring up a microphone capable of recording in stereo? Would it require 2 XLR heads? How do I plug it into my computer soundcard (Computer soundcards uses 3.5mm stereo plugs, but for mics i understand that there is gnd, - and +, so it is still mono)?

A single microphone capsule can only record in mono. For stereo recording, a minimum of two microphones are required

The microphone input on a standard PC soundcard is always mono. For the reason stated above.

Unfortunately you are looking at a binaural microphone arrangement. This is a method of stereo recording that is specifically suited to headphone listening, and little other. The microphone mounting and placement is as critical as the fact that two microphones are being used. Harvey gives some wonderful insights into micropohones, including recording in Stereo, etc. There is a link somewhere to a word and pdf file that has the entire thread condensed for offline reading.

The short story is: you CANNOT connect a binaural or other stereo microphone arrangement directly to a soundcard, you will need some sort of a preamp (Like the m-Audio Audiobuddy) so that you can plug it into the LINE in on the soundcard, which is a Stereo input.

BTW that other (-) sign is the negative pole of the 9V battery. It is being used to power the electret/condensor capsule. The + side of the battery is connected to the capsule to provide phantom power.
