Newbie needs a starting DAC

Hello all,


Newbie here. My setup includes Linux PC driving pair of JBL LSR305. Currently have mini PCM2704 kit ($8.00 from ebay). Audio sources are mixed mp3, cd rips and youtube.



I dont have audiophile ears but could feel difference between PMC2704 and LGV20's ES9218 DAC (Brand/Specs bias ? or its internal amplifier making sound more vivid ?).


I am reluctant going on ESS Sabre route despite its top of the line specs because of its price and being back box in terms of data sheets.



Can someone pitch in a starter friendly DAC with decent sound and not overwhelming with its power design requirements. Something with a reference design, existing design/pcb here or ebay. I dont mind getting pcb through OSH Park or ebay and source other components from Mouser and ebay. Also have soldered QFN-100 using hot air before. Or something ready made that i can disassemble and tinker around.

i missed to mention, i dont specifically need usb support on dac. i would buy last gen xmos or hack one of smt32 or psoc5lp board for usb audio and i2s or whatever protocol chip requires.

I have a curryman dac in the swap meet section, have a look, might be just what youre looking for.......

The Curryman DAC is a nice starter DAC, I built one for my garage system, it sounds very nice.
