newbie drill/tap question

Yes, #43 is correct for a normal tap. (There is another kind of tap called a "roll tap" or a "thread-forming tap" that requires a different drill size.)

The best place to find this information on-line is McMaster-Carr. On their web site you can download PDFs of their catalog pages. They have a page that has tables for drill sizes and another page with the drill sizes required for various taps.
