New guy in Chicago

Hey Everybody,
I'm very glad that I stumbled upon a post here a few days ago. I'm an absolute newbie in terms of electronics DIY, but not listening.
My project interest is a buffered passive preamp. I've been researching designs for these for the last few months. Basically, I've spent too much time reading the audiophile press and feel like I'm ready to try something a bit more accurate than what I've got now.
I'll probably be reaching out to some members in the Chicago area over the next few months - unless somebody tells me that it isn't considered appropriate.

Here's my audiophile history for those who care:
The present: Unison Research Unico SE integrated and Unico CD cd player, Rega P3, Acoustic Zen Adagio speakers. I used a Cairn Fog 3 player for a long time, but a bit too much personality. I recently built two power cords and was surprised by how much it improved my system that had been using Zu Bok cords all along.
The past: Cambridge Audio integrated and cd player with PSB Stratus Bronze speakers. I was still listening to 99% rock at this point. I only began to think about upgrading further when I started listening to a lot more classical and (even over the radio) it was obvious where passages became more than this system could handle well.
Ancient history: The last good integrated built by Sherwood and Scott speakers. This served me well though my higher education and into my '30's. The Sherwood suffered a slow death because of its switches crapping out. Everybody told me that they couldn't be replaced because of their funky outdated style. I niavely listened to people back then.

Oh yeah, really this will probably end up being an active preamp with a bypass switch so I can keep using my tuner.
