Hi, I have just brought a neutrik nte 10-3 to use in a simple mic pre I want to make.
What I need to know is what to do with the extra wire (the one for 1:3) as you have a choice of 1:10 or 1:3
I've looked everywhere for info on this including the neutrik website but can't find anything other than the data sheet which doesn't say, also tried to find general info but I'm stumped!
Please help!!

Extra wire? two input and three output as it is balanced line. These are for isolation and microphone use.
Ok great you are obviously familiar with this product, so please tell me how to connect it for 1:10 step up use, thanks

Here's the pinout for an XLR connector.
Pin 1 - Chassis ground (for a shield, not a signal conductor)
Pin 2 - positive or hot polarity signal
Pin 3 - negative or cold polarity signal
There's no gain selection available in this connector.
Are you trying to connect it to a transformer?

Ok, sorry, now I understand. Use this transformer connection:
Input - white (+) / yellow (-)
Output (x3) - red (+) / blue (-)
Output (x10) - red (+) / black (-)
Thanks rayma, this is how I understood it, so this will leave a spare wire in each case. What I am wondering is what to do with the blue wire? surely leaving it hanging will be a bad idea like an antenna picking up local radio??

There's not much choice, just fold over the end and heat shrink it. Then twist it and tie it up with the other two wires on the way to the pcb.
Preferably, you could have a 3 pin pcb connector for the secondary wires, with the third pin unconnected. This way the extra wire could be
treated the same as the other two, just not used.

The drawing pdf, Post5, shows the wire codes and windings.
That info should have been in post1.

I didn't ask anyone to search / research my post, I just wondered if anyone happened to know the answer. The first reply was totally wrong, just wrong information, which is really unhelpful. Anyway you haven't offered any help with this or been in the conversation so why criticize my question? If you want to help me out by showing / telling me the correct way to start a new thread, then that would be useful and helpful but since the question has already been answered your reply is coming across as rather critical.
I always thought the forum was a place for people to help each other by sharing knowledge and ideas but for some its seems to be a platform to show off how clever they are whilst scoffing at anyone daring to ask simple questions.
Its a shame, as I come here as a humble beginner trying to gain some basic knowledge, not demanding anything from anyone, and yet each time you reply you seem hostile.
Maybe I am reading it all wrong as you clearly have great knowledge and experience in electronics, but please remember I am a beginner (in electronics and in this forum) who is trying to learn and educate myself, and I do really appreciate any help / advice,

Yes I understand that. I thought it might be a known product that people might have used for similar purposes. You are right of course I should have posted a link in my first post.
And yes I have been around for that long, mostly just reading threads, I think I have made what 3 threads myself so I have not had a lot of experience with posting on diyaudio. I do however intend to spend a bit more time on here, mostly because I want expand my understanding of audio electronics for practical reasons as I want to build circuits I will be using. However I hope I can also contribute something here as well.
Please realise some of us are real novices just having fun building bits of kit for gigs etc without a great deal of knowledge or experience of the theory but with a lot of passion and a desire to understand and improve on what we know.

Certainly we are a help each other community, most of my posts are about helping Members and many are directed at absolute beginners.
Thanks to Rayma for the words of advice.. I have now built a very simple microphone preamp using the neutrik transformer and I'm very happy with it. The design came from the book Small Signal Audio Design.

I just got one of these for a microphone OPT. Looking at the wiring diagram, it looks like the high impedance side is tapped at 3:1 and 10:1. There is no mention of 7:1 though this is a common ratio for mic. OPTs. Anybody used it in 7:1 and can comment on the SQ?

Sound quality of small transformers will depend on both the driving source impedance and the working signal level. Not sure anecdotal reports are much use without more detail than most users can supply.

Yes - it's pretty clear that Blue-Black gives you 7:1. I guess the only thing to do is try it out and listen to the results. It's a very cheap transformer, but has had good reports from users. I haven't seen any mention of 7:1 in user reports so far, so it's likely that it's being used in 10:1.
