Hi everyone, I'm kinda new here, and to amp repairs as well.
So the problem is, the balance pot in my Pioneer sa-6500 is a bit worn, most likely, as cleaning it did not help. (Chicking with a multimeter there was a difference between the two pots one read 286K and the other around 246K)
I was looking for replacement pots but just could not find any. It was mentioned on this forum before so I can link an image of the pot itself.
Now is this a so called dual pot? Do stacked, dual, dual gang mean the same?
According to what I have found so far, I was looking for a 250K dual pot in a 24mm housing with pin for PCB mount, without success. (UK seller would be the best but im willing to buy from abroad as well)
Could someone help me with this?

Never heard of "stacked" when talking of pots, not in the UK anyway. Yes, its a dual gang.
If your mechanically minded you might be able to open it up to clean the track and wiper and also bend the wiper a fraction so it runs on fresh track. Those little overlapping flanges/tabs should bend easily and it come apart. But no guarantees 🙂 so you may have to replace with new. Would a smaller pot fit and you could just add short leads to reach the PCB.
Also check if its a linear or some special type of log law (balance controls sometimes are).

thanks for the reply! It is linear. I have already opened the back part of it, but could not get to the front one. Opening the tabs was not enough as the axel or whatever you call it seems to hold the whole thing together. Maybe cleaning the other part would help but I don't think it would solve the problem (left and right are not balanced in center position, and one side gets quiet sometimes). A smaller pot would be a bit of a pain to mount to the front panel. Would have to cut a hole for the stabiliezer arm of the pot and I would try to avoid that.
Would something like this fit,

Bolt to front panel and hard wire to PCB.

that one might actually fit, but i have decided to bypass the balance pot instead as im not using it anyway. thank you very much for your help! I might pm you or open a thread later if I need help bypassing it 🙂.
It should be easy enough to bypass if it comes down to doing to that. You can post that part of the circuit to this thread if you get stuck 🙂

Is it 🙂 I don't know without seeing a circuit. The output is often taken from the wiper so it would involve linking the centre pin of the pot to the "input" side.
Done that wrong... keep the resistor in circuit. Can't make it out. 68 or 6.8K ? Link to the other side of it.
with this method, can I leave the pot in its original position? After bypassed like this does it still have any effect on the circuit?
i've done it following the picture above(your drawings only) and the pot still functions. Any ideas?
Hmmm... yes I can see you would have to take the pot out to stop that although leaving it in should be no detriment when the pot is centred. If you look at the pot symbol the solid bit is "non resistive", in other words a short as the wiper moves along it. The two gangs are mirror images, as one becomes "short" the other side becomes resistive as the pot is turned. In the centre both are intended to "short" so you get a direct signal. That's what the added links ensure if the wiper contact were intermittent for example.
It shouldn't be detrimental although the way it works now is slightly different in that it shorts the signal to ground as the pot is turned using the 6.8K and the pot as a potential divider rather than the pot itself (if that makes sense 🙂)

I was busy for last few days but now that I've read your last comment it makes perfect sense 🙂. Thanks for the help, I'll leave pot in coz it looks much better this way. I never really use the balance anyway so this project is finished until I find a perfect replacement pot.
