Need advice re powering USB DAC

Hi there,
I have a RME Babyface USB audio interface and a nice v. low noise 5v linear power supply. I want to get rid of the noisy PC switching power supply.
I've tried cutting ground and +5v of the USB cable, but it doesn't work that way (no surprise). It would only work if ground is let intact (connecting both grounds together, and taking +5v from the linear supply instead of PC).

- Am I still better off this way vs normal PC power supply via usb? Does it make sense to feed +5v from a linear supply and leave the ground to PC?
- I've read somewhere that a 220 Ohm resistor between gnd and +5v at the PC end could trigger the PC to initialize the device as normally. Any thoughts on this?

Attempting full galvanic isolation would introduce all sorts of other problems which I don't want to mess with. RME also has external power input, but it only accepts 6v at least, which I don't have, and it still has to be connected via USB that way anyway.

Many thanks for your thoughts..
