I had the opportunity to tour the Nova laser facility when the NIF was just being planned, with the 8 beams of nova being something of a test for NIF's 192. I still think that the Lawrence Livermore Labs are just about the most awesome place on earth even though I'm no longer 15.

Smashing, I love big machines. My niece is in her first year at uni doing physics and maths, and her department has ties to CERN. I'm gently nagging her to go work there, so I can get a guided tour. 🙂
Hearing about ITER and NIF at a lecture at my workplace, I was kind of disappointed when I later on learned that NIF is not really about fusion energy, but about nuclear weapons. Like France's Megajoule (or something like that).
HiPER would be the public domain, "good" equivalent of NIF.
