Nakamichi TA-3A Sound Not Working

Bought a Nakamichi TA-3A from Craigslist from someone who claimed it worked fine. When I got it, it didn't worked fine, it didn't work at all. Subwoofer Pre-out does in fact work, I assume this means the pre-amp section is ok. When I go to hook up my NHT Super Zero's it doesn't play. There is nothing, not even a hum. I made sure speakers A and B were checked and all that stuff and I made sure my source was good.

Tuner seems to work fine as I could hear the bass sounds from my subwoofer. And the inputs seem to work fine as well. It appears to me that something is amiss with the speakers. Oh, I tried it on the B speakers as well and still nothing.

Can anyone help me? I'm thinking of buying Deoxit or maybe checking fuses but I don't know how to do it. I'm newbie to this stuff! 😮

Thanks in advance for any helps.

Hi mahadragon,
Nice Receiver, I have a TA-2.

These receivers have a resistor in the amplifier sections that act as a constant current source. They are a little under-rated for dissipation and can open. I don't see any reason for both to be open though. Normally when the first channel quits, they bring in the receiver for service. So, there is likely another problem.

Personally, I think that you ought to take your TA-3 into a good audio service shop (not a store!). Servicing receivers isn't something a beginner is likely to be successful at, and the chances are you may cause enough damage to make it not worth repair. This is a nice receiver. Also, the tuner PCB sits over the bottom amplifier section making it more difficult to work on.

Once you get the unit back, you must leave extra room over top of this set so it doesn't cook itself to death (or the device on top). These are a Stasis design and throw off a lot of heat. I'm not sure how familiar Nelson is with the Nakamichi version of his amplifier design, so I'm not certain how much assistance you might get.

I ran a service shop during the time these receivers were new. We were authorized warranty for Nakamichi and I had serviced some of this model. I recall that there were some transistors that would die due to being overheated as well. These are things I would remember if the set was in front of me. I'm in Canada, so I am not attempting to service your receiver. There should be some good shops near you.

Don't bother, there isn't anything chemicals will do for you but cause damage when improperly used. Also, taking the set to someone who thinks they can service it that doesn't repair equipment like this every day will also probably lead to a ruined receiver. Get it to a proper audio service technician! I am trying to save you money here. If you don't think it is worth doing it right, sell it down the line to someone who will have it repaired properly. My TA-2 was hacked up when I got it, struck by technician. The original owner gave up on it due to previous "technicians".

I'd suspect a bad solder in the power amp section, causing it going into protection, if it was working prior to shipping.

Is the power led flashing green constantly? (it should only do that for 5 seconds after power on and go solid green as the speaker relay kicks in.)

I had the same problem with a SR4a the problem was the speaker switch was sticking and not making contact. Also the connections for the speakers are NOT five way, so if you stuff a banana plug in it you have no connection. The TA 2a I have has very weak plastic clips that always make contact. The loudness control also does weird things so you get the output of a table radio. I do agree that if you can afford it take it to a QUALITY shop if you can find one. These units are amassing when working. Not to be rude what did you pay for it?
