Mystery Transistors - RCA 36810?

I have a whole bunch of unknown power transistors that were obtained with some surplus aerospace parts.

I can't even identify the metal can package on these things. The major diameter is .600 in and the minor diameter is .500 and they have a .300 diameter pin circle. One pin is connected to the case.

They are all RCA 36810 and are silicon (.575 V drop @ 4mA). They are from several different lot numbers. I have no idea if they useful for audio, they might be for some sort of microwave component.

Can these be characterized?

I sure do have a bunch of these things....

If anyone has the wherewithal to examine some of these mystery transistors to try and figure out what they are, and if you'd like to give it a shot, just let me know and I'll try and send some along to you for a look-see.

Yep! TO-8 case.

2N1701 - Transistor, NPN. P/N: 2N1701.

Thanks simon. Now we're making progress.

A quick check of breakdown voltage and Beta should show they are about the same as a 2N1701.

Uses; relay driver, voltage regulator, 10 watt industrial amplifier, heater control and artwork.

Not really valuable, but should sub for just about any low to medium power transistor.

One nice thing to test is noise level, sometimes at low current large die transistors can be very quiet!
