Well, I managed to blag these drivers for free today, they are out of an old PA system. I got 8, but only 4 are working, so I am thinking of knocking up a 1.5 way system for my computer, depending on their specs.
Obviously I need to measure them first, but I was just wondering if anyone had seen similar drivers before. They are 4" jobs, with a 1" voice coil and a hefty magnet, and came out of a box built in the mid nineties. The only other identification I have is that they have a code 804x on the magnet. Anyone seen anything like them before?

Those are Dynacord Speakers. Electrovoice (EV)
and Dynacord were together at one time. Don't
know the relation now.
One things for sure, they are not bass drivers.
Midrange would be more the criteria for those
speakers.
I remember seeing box that held 4 of those
speakers with Piezo Tweeters in them.
It was like the number one top box you
would find in record shops in the early to
late eightees.
Again, no bass driver, but should play
midrange fine.

Re: Re: My new toys
It crossed my mind😉
It's going to be a couple of days before I can test them, but I couldn't resist just plugging a bare driver into one of my GCs last night and they sound pretty good. Obviously no idea as to bass, but mids and highs sound great so I will probably go mostly fullrange, and I have an old 10" Audax HDA I can use to knock up a single sub if need be.
Easier to post a blow up rather than type it all in!

Re: Re: Re: My new toys
There are 4 drivers, major requirement for bi-pole 🙂
I was going to say that the basket looked Japanese, and if Japanese, the 6-legged basket screams Foster... and there it is written on the back :^)
This is likely a pro varient of the FE103. Bigger magnet & surround goes the wrong way. Should make a good little FR... might need a little help above 10k.

Well, I ran them all up with my trust test GC today, and one of them has a little bit of a voice coil rub at high volumes, hmmm.
I think I will do a dustcapectomy on it tomorrow and see if there's any rubbish in the gap that I can clean up or hoover out. If that doesn't work, I may have to give up on the push-push idea🙁
Unfortunately it's been raining all day, so I haven't had chance to take them outside and do some proper measurements, however just sticking a mic on them while they were sitting on the bench seems to give a roll off at about 14k at the top, and 100Hz at the bottom. These could be quite fun🙂

DYNACORD?
Hi,
Dynacord still has a range of PA speakers, I remember the brandname from studios, festivals and guitaramp speakers.
DYNACORD GERMANY.
Main thing is they seem well made and Fostex aren't the kind of speakers I'd spit at.😉

JoeBob said:Fostex is a devision of Foster, or so I've been told.
Fostex could be considered the hi-end hifi dividion of Foster who make everything including the monster 1" drivers in your laptop.
Fostex hasn't been around all that long relatively and the vintage stuff (hifi or othewise) is Foster.

Re: DYNACORD?
Yeah, I checked out the website, but they don't seem to have an archive of old kit🙁 Shame.
The boxes each contained a 15" EV bass and an EV compression slot tweeter, along with the 4 Fostex drivers I claimed. The other drivers needed reconing, but were otherwise industry standard, and so my mate kept them for stock. I didn't get much chance to look at the crossover, but I may well be able to salvage some other bits from that as well next week.
The next thing on my list of possible things to blag are a couple of dead Toa 1200w per side power amps. The electronics are completely shot, and to be honest, they don't sound that good when they do work, but I might be able to use the hardware and PSU caps for something😉

Well, I finally got round to testing these drivers, and I'm a little put back. The computer monitor speakers idea will be delayed, as these are very definately mid range drivers...
