OK So I ordered the HQI setup today and hopefully it will be here within the week. So I started to take apart My portascribe g-100, Not great But It will do for now. However I didnt take any before riping apart pics( Got started and Just forgot bout ya guys) anyway Here is The progress so far, Removal of everything Including the origoanl fan( not intentional bUt it was such a rats nest It was easier this way) I have a pic of everything taken apart see below, In the upper right corner you can see the cage with the spherical reflector in it had to do some hacking on that so a HQI could fit. Anyone know why the reflector set atop a platform that could mive up and down? Wierd I think I will omitt that part in the final desighn.

and finally the origonal fan, It was working But Again the wires what one is Hot and what one is common? MORAL of the story take lots of before pics if for nothing else your own belefit.

OK I have finished the retro fit and Im not all that happy with it, Granted the bulb is much cooler and better color but not that much brighter. Could that be do to the fact that the OHP is old and has crappy optics? also On the elmo SD what is the glass that sits just above the bulb for? Is it a condenser? if so would that make the difference in how Mine isnt that bright? Hummmmm any thoughts????????????

VF do u have any temp measuring utilities? if so could you measure you OHP temps? i dont even think it goes 40c if this is correct then we can use an LCD monitor with ease 🙂

Well for testing I used My telex m2x, powerview 820 and a proxima 822c, Yea I know Im a panel ***** but they are so nice and portable they still have there place with me. Tho I will get a lcd monitor soon for a more permanent setup, as for measuring temps I will try and do that, My ballest is inside My OHP with the light and honestly the Heat isnt enough to even make the panel warm, just slightly warm but not hot like my 410 fxl projector. So yea I will take temp measurements even after 3 hrs of working the other day it was still nice and cool. as for me, Im still wondering if its all about the optics in that its not really bright. I will do a comparison pic between that and the 410 fxl sometime soon. The Light Color is the best tho a Nice bright true white. Talk to u Soon L8er
your right... i cant put my finger on it but..it would seem its LESS bright then my DYS i think the Yellowish color gives the illusion of a brighter picture, but im still happy with it , its like 1-2% darker

about the ballast being on the inside...i think thats a bad idea..it even sez dont put it bulb on the ballast...lol heat lower the ballast life ,
ace was telling me this earlier that the HQI bulb is HOT but the light output isnt SO...if the ballast is near the bulb u get more heat

Negative Just got done watching 2 movies yesterday on the new projector( 4 hrs) and over the 4 hrs the inside only got to 100 MAX degrees( it was slightly warm) But I would suspect in My FXL ohp it gets to 175+ It gets freaking HOTTTTTTTTTTT so That My OHP which has the HQI and ballest inside of it is going to work well. Still not as bright as I wanted But the bulb is whiter and the bulb lasts something the 20,000 hrs so Im pleased. I might do some experamentation with reflective materials in the OHP to see if that helps any and I suspect that using a better OHP for a retrofit( triplet lens etc) would yield a better result. I will take the 250 and do a side by side comparison with the 410 fxl and see what the differences are. I will post back later tonight or tomorrow But 100 degrees thats extreamly great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok here is the comparison pic, I just did it with the lcd on and off nothing on the screen. Its rather dissapointing the brighter one is the fxl in both pics, on a different note I did place a thermometer in the 410 fxl and it reached 140 degrees F within 1.5 min so that was the max amount it( the therm) would go so yes fxl is hotttttttttttttttttttttt danggggggggggggg hotttttttttttttttttt. anyway I will keep tinkering and see what happens.

Hmm, so this same retrofit that I am about to undertake will result in a image thats not as bright as the FXL i already have?? NOOOO!! 🙁 I even bought the bulb already!! Is it even worth it to rip my OHP apart now?
50 well lets say that may OHP is crap to begin with optics wise so I would say try it still you may have better luck, Im thinking for me tho I just need a bigger reflector mine is about a inch across and something in the range of 2-2.5 in would be better for me.
the ups overcome the downs, if you wish to use hot short life crappy FXL(or DYS im my case) then feel free but i love my HQI 🙂

Negative the 410 fxl was 140 f in 1-2 min thats 45.7777777C
and the HQI was a MAX 100f thats 23.55555555555555 C
Remember tho I left the Thermometer in the OHP with the HQI for 4 hrs and the One in the fxl for 3 min( It maxed out my therm so I had to take it out) hope that helps more

I think it's a close cousin to the Apollo AI-1000, and probably has a singlet projection lense. I'm going the 250W MH HQI retrofit option with it, and I'm wondering if i'm going to have similar image problems as VF seems to be having. If I do, do you think I can just buy a triplet lense from DIYlabs, and replace the singlet? (I hope it's the same size)

kool great price😉 it appears exactly the same as the AI-1000 on the ouside but the inside suggests otherwise,yes the optics most likely will suck as do most OHPS, yes a lens retrofit should work 🙂
