music retrieved from HD vs CD

I wonder anyone here has done any comparison between sound quality retrieved from Hard disk(HD) and that from CD transport player.

With decreasing cost of storage, music CD can be stored in HD even without compression. This music data can be retreived from PC which acts as a USB host and output it via the USB to an external DAC. How does this compared to CD players which output music data via coaxial output to the an external DAC?

I am putting together PC based system(laptop) with an external DAC, and my initial thoughts is that the PC based system can sound pretty good as well. Has any here made any direct comparison, I would like to hear from those who has?

cheers.

A bit surprising that you searched and found nothing on this topic 🙂

It's difficult to talk of "direct comparison" as both USB and SPDIF are very much dependent on implementation. Both are obviously compromised so any comparison may favour one or the other depending on the particular approach.

In my setup the differences are not huge with slight bias towards a dedicated transport/dac. This involves an 8412/8414/8416 spdif to i2s compared to 2707 usb/i2s without secondary pll or reclocking.
