I've got an unused set of Polk TSi 100 and CS10 that have some cosmetic issues from the previous owner, I've sold the other speakers I bought them with and have had them knocking around since upgrading. I also have an old Kenwood receiver w/ sub that's also sitting since upgrading. It's got me thinking of a fun project for my limited capabilities.
What I was thinking is a RLC speaker with a sub all built into the same box. It would be akin to a large center & would be used under the TV in the bedroom. I was going to reuse the polk speakers/XO/binding posts/ports and the Kenwood sub & it's bits.
My plan was to simply copy the internal volume of all the speakers and build them kinda how many of the current 3 & 4 way tower speakers seem to be built with separate internal chambers in the tower.
My main question comes in with porting. In looking at the variety of #order designs I am completely confused on how they sound/function just from looking at them It seems easiest just to have the RLC speakers in the front port into the bass cabinet which will be in the rear. Otherwise the RL will probably port to the sides & the C would port down. I'm totally unclear on whether porting the front speakers to the bass cab would just muck everything up though.
Seems like a fun project as I have nothing to loose, only MDF to buy and like the idea of single/easy speaker solution to add some oomph to the TV.
If you've taken the time to read this I thank you, if you offer a constructive reply I than you doubly. - JL

It's not stupid if you enjoy it and might learn something for almost no money. I certainly used to think about rebuilding my old Polks when I was young. Go with a larger sealed box for the L & R.
BTW, I never did re-house any functional speakers. Instead I found half-decent drivers on sale at Madisound and built cabinets for them. That way, I got to have my cake and eat it too.
Thanks for the reply.
If the boxes weren't already damaged I wouldn't consider it, but they've got drill holes in them from mounting brackets and the grill of the center was munched on by a dog...they're just not really suited for anything but the shop at this point...but I've got bigger speakers in the shop...
I don't have anything to go off for volume increase on the L/R, do you have a recommendation? Do you think the center would benefit as well? The L/R are certainly rather small speakers, but it also strikes me as strange when I see a single 5.25" in a floor stander.
Thanks for any recommendations. - JL

The sealed center would make the whole porting issue a non issue also, seems ideal if the recommendation is to go unported on the L/R...
i'm certain the sub would destroy the other speakers. it wouldn't really be anything more than fourth-order, other than technically, and i'm sure if you ran the numbers, they would only back that up. i'm assuming you are going to port them for a decent mid-low, and the sub for somewhere in the 80-60 and down range. below the tuning f, especially if you tune near fs, response drops off, and with significant unloading. this means, that the lower frequencies will more than bottom out the mids. first decent bass note and they will bottom give off a loud buzz and be done. not trying to rag on you, just showing how it works and why. honestly, i see a 5.25 as a fairly large driver for a surround speaker, but that is personal taste. i would look for a response curve on them, or, build an ideal sealed enclosure for your power level out of scrap wood, nothing fancy, and "audition" it's natural sound. if you think ity needs help in the range somewhere, then i see no harm in porting to that target. that would be especially helpful if the sub leaves for the need to add some low-end extension to the mids
Hi,
Porting into the sub will severely mess things up.
Revamping the enclosures might be somewhat easier.
However if you go for it sealed and well stuffed
volumes of about 2/3 of the current vented
cabinets is perhaps a sensible compact option.
Your could increase the LCR vented volumes,
but that is rather defeating the point isn't it ?
(Move on the cabinets to someone else,
I'm sure someone could use them.)
rgds, sreten.
FWIW for many single driver floorstanders
the bottom section is sealed off, and is
just a stand, that could be sand filled.

Thank you for your replies.
After reading further and as AKHeathen noted, the sub pushing on the mids is....not a good idea...doh!
The sub being part of the system is out at this point.
I do want to reiterate that I'm not damaging anything, I'm re-purposing damaged speakers.
It's function is really more of a TV stand than anything else. Think this with no legs & wall mounted (relatively high as it'll be watched from the bed.

It'll also be adaptable for legs later if it's use changes. Since they've already done lots of calculations on it & I don't have the T/S info on the speakers I am going to follow the Polk design. Not having a sub in there will make it quite easy. I think this project isn't as much DIY audio as it is DIY TV stand...
