I don't think that would be a bad project, assuming that you have the woodworking skills to build the enclosures properly... but that's the case with any DIY speaker project. This enclosure is bigger than others, but still just a rectangular box.
The crossover and parts list has already been spelled out for you, so all the hard part is done. Just build the enclosures and assemble it.
I can't comment on the sound quality of that particular setup, but from the sounds of it, if you're into rock music, this may be a great setup, especially for the cost.
Personally I've been thinking about building a set of Dayton IIIs, but I'm also thinking about the Dayton 8s instead. Hopefully somebody who has had an opportunity to hear both can chime in and give a good comparison on their sound characteristics.

Peter,
Before you start a speaker building project you should check with folks at www.Madisound.com. they have some great projects and great speaker and components.
Also check with Eliot at www.Zalytron.com they have project, speakers and cabinets.
Both of these companies can help you with aspects of the design.
