Morel MDT30 - life in the old dogs?

For a while now my main speaker has been settled; a three way SEAS L18, Morel EM1308 and SEAS 22TAFG. A very nice sounding speaker - lots of detail and ability to convey every nuance of a musical performance.

Despite being a successful design, I've always felt the treble, while exceptionally clear and natural, was a bit too refined and 'polite'. I really need a bit more agression. No amount of x/o 'adjustments' could get the 22TAFG delivering the kind of attack I like.

Tucked away in a cupboard I had a old pair of Morel MDT30s. I used to use these many years ago in a two way 8" design with a 2.7kHz x/o, and a three way 3kHz. Plenty of 'bite' and attack, but, a bit rough and grainy - no doubt a product of distortion. Nevertheless, I thought I'd give them a go.

All the bite and attack I remember, but, none of the distortion/roughness. Just good clean treble with smooth, sweet strings (an area where they always disappointed). Most impressive really.

All I can put this down to is the x/o now being 4kHz (3rd order electrical) and all the distortion low down being filtered out.

I'm going to give these a fair run before I decide where to go next. Definitely some life in the old dogs 😉
