My trusty Monsoon planar speakers are failing/cutting in and out. I've used them for quite a while and moved them to a few different offices, so I knew they wouldn't last forever. I might try opening them up (don't know if that;ll break them further) to see if it's a loose wire or something, but I'm also considering a replacement.
Are there small (4"x6" ish) planar replacements I could build/add? I'm running the system off a Teac DAC/Integrated amp and have a subwoofer crossed at about 150hz, but I'm just so impressed with these little speakers that I can't go back to any traditional drivers, especially for the size!

Before you blame the speakers, check them on another amp. There are many issues with the connection of the controller at the woofer./amo which give the same symptoms.
That said, i should still have some spares of the satellites.

Ya, I already ditched the original amp and controller years ago when they broke and run the sats with a Teac integrated amp and Focal 8" subwoofer.
Different problem (buzzing) in this thread, but lots of pics to discourage you from opening them up!
Which model do you have, Zcables?
I fixed buzz in Sonigistix Monsoon planar magnetic drivers

Looks like a PM-9. I have a pair of those!
Greebster opened up his and showed us:

That looks like them and I won't open them up.
I don't know the differences with the various Monsoon planar sats, but it looks like there were a few different designs.

PM-9 is one of the later models and despite what I said earlier, is actually fairly straightforward to open up as it has screws and not rivets holding it together. You'll need strong hands to keep things aligned due to the strong magnetic forces, but I think you can handle it?
I opened one of mine and got it back together and still playing....

One of my sats is confirmed dead. Any similar drivers I can use to build a new pair of sats? I was looking at them used on eBay and the price are surprising, but maybe not as they are good drivers.
Let me check with Chris as to where he put them and i’ll get back once i check what i have. Probably won’t be till next week, prepping for diyFEST #14 this weekend.

Dead, and reads open circuit? (My PM-9 both read 4.2 Ohms DC.)
Only thing that can go wrong is the long trace breaks opens somewhere. Find it and fix it!?

How's it going, zcables?
I have not read it yet, but here's a forum for some Monsoon planar magnetics problems:
