Modifying an AntLion Modmic - Removable Cable

Hi there,

I have just signed up from a recommendation from someone from another forum. They suggested you guys might be able to offer better advice on my idea.

For those who don't know, a Modmic is basically just a microphone on a boom with a magnetic attachment that sticks it to your own headphones. They cost about £40-50 and they're pretty good in my opinion.

My one gripe with it though is that the cable/wire, which terminates with a 3.5mm jack, is 3 meters in length and is non-detachable.

I can see some situations where having cables of this length would be beneficial, but for me, I use it sat right next to the PC and this length of cable is just too long. I tried braiding it, and while it did shorten it, it just made it easier to snag on things and pull it out of position.

This is an image of the mic, boom, mute switch and then the rest of the cable.

Anyway, I want to be able to shorten the cable of the Modmic in a more elegant way, but I don't want to shorten it permanently; who knows, I might one day want to have a 3m cable for whatever reason.

What I propose is: Cut the cable approx 10cm below the mute switch and then add a female 3.5mm line socket. I can then either make or buy cables of various lengths, all of which have male 3.5mm jacks on either end; one of which plugs into the computer, and the other into... you guessed it... the female 3.5mm line socket I would have added to the Modmic.

Now there are some hurdles for me to get over before I could even consider attempting this:

1. I don't even know if this is possible without causing too much noise/interference on on the mic.
2. I know that I would have splice and solder some wires at some point. While I have never done this before, I am willing to give it the good old college try.
3. If it is possible, I am unsure of what cable/wire I would need to use for the 3.5mm-3.5mm cables that would connect from the new Modmic 3.5mm female socket to the computer. Having Googled the hell out of the topic, I am guessing a standard speaker cable would do this? Does it need to be shielded? Does it need to be stereo or mono? Do the connectors need to be stereo or mono? These are facts that would need to be cleared up by people who know about this kind of thing (that's you guys hopefully 😛)

So... any advice that anyone can offer on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I've found some of these kinds of devices with very flexible cables have metalized polymer (basically thread) conductors and you can't solder to them - if you have a cable constructed of this material you may have problems terminating it.

Note that you can post pictures directly on the forum (rather than linking from elsewhere) and we'd prefer that.. 😀

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your reply.

Based on your opinion, it sounds like it is more trouble that it's worth. I have managed to find a semi-tidy way of cabling it up anyway now so I guess I will write this off as a mad idea 🙂

Noted regarding the images as well for future 🙂

Thanks.
