Model Airplanes

One of my first hobbies was building airplanes. I started before I started school, so I must have been 4 years old.

I continued building airplanes for many years off, and on. 25 years ago I built a One Nite 28 rubber band powered airplane. It was a good flyer, and I always wanted to convert one to RC (Radio Controlled) operation.

My family flew RC airplanes in the 60s, and my son and I even built "Mini Mombo" RC planes to fly with my father a few years before he passed.

Recently my son came home to go back to college.

We are back to the old hobby.

Great job on the plane. Doing something with your kids always creates lasting memories. I still remember building these things with my dad.

I used to work in a hobby shop years ago and I loved building those kits. The balsa in the kits always wound up being too heavy and it would never fly well. If you go the hobby shop and get the championship balsa that is softer and lighter you will have better luck getting it to fly longer.

Young Flier.

I have a couple hundred dollars worth of balsa I got from my father before he passed.

We took a brand new kit and made patterns from the laser cut balsa ribs, then used the patterns to cut out all of the parts from sheet balsa.

The planes are completely scratch built. It is not as difficult as it sounds, it just takes patients and time.

The balsa in the kits is actually quite good quality.

Here is the latest family member (my grandson) to take up flying models. I bought a case of the rubber band airplanes so I can take several every time I go to visit.
