I’m new to the forum and am having a problem navigating. I only have the option to display threads in Linear mode. The other two modes are missing from the selection box. What am I doing wrong?
This forum only has linear threads. Where did you see the option to display threads in another mode?
The information below was found under User CP, Edit Options, Thread Display Options, Thread Display Mode. In the Thread Display Mode section, click on “this help page”.
Can I change the order of posts?
You have a choice over how you view threads. When you're in a thread, look at the top bar. On the right hand side you'll see 'Display Mode'. Click on this and it lets you change how posts are ordered.
You have three choices:
Linear Mode - posts are displayed chronologically, usually from oldest to newest. Posts are shown in a flat mode so that many posts can be viewed simultaneously. It is possible to change the ordering by changing your preferences in the User CP
Threaded Mode - a tree is shown along with every post. This shows you the relationship each post has to the others. It's easy to see who responded to whom. Only one post is shown at a time. By clicking on a single post in the post tree, the page will show that post and all posts made in response to it.
Hybrid Mode - This is a mixture of the linear and threaded modes. The post tree is displayed as in the threaded mode, but many posts are shown at the same time as in the linear modes.

Indeed there is an apparent option deep in the CP. See screen-grab. See also:

Franksr.... 30 years ago I managed a truly threaded forum. It has good and bad points. Since then fashion has swung strongly Linear. Tracking a thread by algorithm never quite follows the conversation. And good threading depends on user discipline, which is fading.
Example: here I am commenting to both Jason and you, but not in a way which is obviously "threaded". No quote! I have been admonished, and I do know how to multi-quote, but sometimes I can not be bothered with the forum's mechanical etiquette.
I suspect this option in vBulletin is either a stub for a feature "to be implemented later", or a vestige of a feature which did not work well and was dropped. I've been here a few years and do not recall ever seeing "threaded mode" working.

PRR, thank you for the information. I’ll just have to get used to the forum as it is. It may just be me but I find this forum very difficult to utilize. It’s still very useful, just not as user friendly as I would hope. Thanks again.
I don't think I've ever seen a threaded implementation of vB live. I love Reddit myself, and Discourse has its place, but as the saying goes you need to have the right tool for the job. What tool is required to manage a 100k post thread? I'm putting my efforts on an amazing search and summarization technology based on interactive signal/noise feedback from the community. Being able to split out a topic from within a thread? It has its good and bad points. I don't think threaded discussion is a great fit at this stage, it's more suited for discussions where it doesn't matter if you miss something.
