Micro Seiki CD-M2 CD player fault

Hi all,

Hope someone can help.
I am trying to resuscitate my Micro Seiki CD-M2, it wasn’t working (would not read disks and the tray wasn’t working) and was left in storage for 3 years.

I have now changed all caps throughout, even at the CDM-1 board, and serviced the motor, etc. Now the disk spins, (too fast at times), tray works fine, but no TOC is ever read, so no info from CD (any CDs). I am starting to think it may be the laser, but not sure. I am reading servicing info of a Philips 960 which is basically the same but cannot find details about Laser adjustments or else.

Looking at the Marantz CD94 service manual, I have identified a possible check to do for the laser functionality. Has anybody done this? I am a bit concerned about de-soldering components, the board is very fragile at the look of it, and even though I have changed the caps I would not want to play with solder activity again.

This is my first go at repairing CD players. Could you help with suggestions, hints, info, anything please?

Thank you. Salvo

Looking at pictures on the internet I see that the CD-mechanism of the CD-M2 is not a "standard" Philips one. I don't know if the CDM-1 is the standard one? I could not find a picture of the actual unit. If so then maybe adjusting the 2 potentiometers for focus and power should do the trick. Also, the torx-screw on top of the motor might need to be adjusted (is hight adjustment of the CD to the laserunit). I've done this in a Philips CD 304, which has the CDM-1. Without measuring you could turn the potentiometers left/right bit by bit (I took a picture of the potentiometers at the start) and see if this does the trick.

Hi, sorry for the late reply, The micro has the same pcb's except for the control one. The CDM-1 is exactly the same as the rest.

The head does move to the innermost position and bobs up and down, but I see no laser light (with caution) coming out.
I'm a bit edgy to start playing with the controller potentiometers as it can become "painful".
