mesuring rough step ratio of transformer!

hi there!

well im fidling around with a test setup of an esl for the higher frequency, using an old solosound panel to test the setup, of the high voltage cascade and the step up tranformer.

its a verry small one because i trying to make something like the tweeter section of the SOny electrostatic tweeter, so i bought a little 100 volt line transformer.

now the problem, i get sound but its way to soft so im trying to find the problem,

first i want to know for sure the etep up ratio of the tranformer is enough so i ran a sinus of 1K and changed the volume till i measdured 1 volt on my multimeter. now i connect the transformer and measure the voltage at the secundary.

one wire at the com and one on the following, now i measure this

8 w i measure 30 volt
4 w i measure 60 volt
2 w i measure 90 volt
1 w i measure 120 volt

does this mean when i use the com wire and the 1 watt i get a ratio of 1:120 ?

i used the 60 for the center tap i know i cant blast 200 watt fullrange on this guy because it will go up in flames using this high ratio. but only frequencys above 3k should at least have a nice eficiency ?

in the sony speakers they used an even smaller tranformer also the amount of wattage produced by the internal amp did not exeed 5 watt.

first questin , is this a good indication when measured ? for a rough stepup ratio ? and if so why is the eficiency sooooo low.

What could it be else ?

cascade ?
i made the cascade like the one used in the book of Fikier, added even one more diode and cap, because the output of the second transformer measures only 180 volt instead of 230.

panel ?
and in the end maybe its the panel , ofcourse but first i want to rull out the easy components, so any sugestions?

3500V for 1 mm spacing seems very doubtful. I use 2 pieces of 100 volt line transformer and connect them in series on 0, 100V side and connect the 4 ohms (1 w) of the 2 transformers in parallel. You should give it a try.

How long have you stopped using these panels? For some old panels, they might take a few hours even days before they can sound nice. Please hook up your panels and be patient.

well i just recoated a panel with glue for wallpaper , so very high resistance coating, made a ring of aluminum tapen al around the membrane to charge.

a little bit beter but still not verry loud.

small question , when adding panels what happens to efficiency ?

is it like loudspeakers used paralel ? + 3 db

also i dont get the setup you used with your 100 volt line trafo's

my trafo's are like this

16 ohM
8 ohm
0

on the other side

1watt
2watt
4watt
8watt
COM

i used 8 and 16 for input it gives me the highest ratio instead of 0 and 8 or 16

when using 2 i would connect the 16 and 8 in paralel with the other transformer. and connect de com from one transformer to the 1 watt of the other, now the secundary is in series (in our setup secundary) amd using these coupled as tap for the HS unit and the other 1 watt tap and com tap to connect ESL.

is this what you ment a well ? or did you put primary also in series?
