Mating ESS Heil to Visaton B200 open baffle

Does anyone have any (passive crossover) experience with mating the Heil ESS AMT to the Visaton B200 for open baffle use?

Im not sure exactly where best to hand off from one to the other. I understand the Heil can be used from about 1000Hz upwards, but perhaps it would be better to use the AMT as a tweeter primarily and roll off the B200 at around 5000Hz?

Or would a better result be to use the Heil to reproduce mids and treble and roll the B200 off around 1000Hz? I really like the sound of the Heil so perhaps this is a better way to go. That said, I don't want to go blowing the AMTs so would need to use reasonably steep slopes in this instance.

If anyone has experience with this, any schematics or crossover component values (or advice) would be appreciated?

Cheers

I don't have direct experience with your intended use. I own a pair of AMT 1A monitors and 8 more AMT Heil tweeters because, I like their sound.

I wanted to setup bi-amped systems at my home and office but, I was concerned about the reports I read showing the heil with a rising response from 1,000 hz to 5,000 hz. Where do I bring them in? I tested the frequency response of all of my heils looking for that "shelf" and did not find it. What I did find led me to believe I should crossover at 1,000hz and above. So, I decided to build test and use what I liked best.

The attached image was created using SIRP and a behringer calibrated mic. The spl at 10 feet was about 90db. The mic was 18 inches from the AMT. It was driven by a GTA SE40 and approximately one watt.

I tested my AMT 1A's in a 25x50 foot room with 12 foot high ceilings. It was possible to adjust the brightness and presence controls so that from 10 feet away the response varied less than 4db from 35-16khz at 90db spl. The measurement was limited by my test equipment.

I had a 6SN7 based tube preamp built with integrated crossovers that rolled off at 18db per octave at 1,000hz. I bi-amped the 1A's with a GTA SE40 for the heil, a Denon POA 2400 for the woofer and a jolida jd100 for the source. The response was still flat within a few db but the improvement in the sound was so good that I began more bi-amped experiments with the heil

I picked up a couple "old" magnavox amp 182 Stereo bi-amp amplifiers. They use 12db per octave crossovers at 1200 hz feeding 6V6 PP amps for the bass and 6V6 SE amps for the highs. I cleaned them up, replaced/changed appropriate parts, balanced the phase splitter and put in good matched sets of tubes. Ran them direct to the AMT 1As and the result was excellent. I use these in my home office connected to a Klipsch MTMs for the bass and a heil for the tweeter. I think I like the Klipsch setup with the magnavox better than the AMT 1A's with special built pre and GTA SE40.

As a result of these experiments I am slowly putting together my phase III test. I have 4 Altec 416B's. I am considering a high efficiency full ranger for mids and the heils for the tweeters. I will try crossovers at 500hz and 2000hz.

Some people that post say you should use the heils at 5,000 hz and above. There is a thread by someone here that built his own AMTs so he could get good response down to 300hz. I like single point source wide band response speakers. If I thought I could get AMTs that were good at 500hz my dream system would be the Altecs and the AMT.

Hi Steve
Thanks for that. I'm sure you're aware of the Hawthorne Audio AMT which is called the 700 for obvious reasons.

A bit about it vs the Heil here: Hawthorne Audio • View topic - Heil AMT 1 vs. 700s

And the skinny on the 700 here: Hawthorne Audio • View topic - Model 700 AMT

They arent cheap but, at $368 each, and then there's the passive crossover to go with that, designed by Danny from GR Research. Not sure what they're asking for that.

They also have another model that is used in their ref speaker but it is not available DIY to my knowledge.

There's plenty on the forum about the 700 though. And no doubt I'm telling you nothing you don't already know.

Cheers

Luigi
