wiki claim a el34 makes 50 watts , which sounds ridiculous to me- i think of dynaco amps etc, i assumed it was about the same as 2 x el84, about 17 watts- so how does the sl5 only make 5 watts?
A pair of EL34s easily make 40W in a good push-pull design.
The Marshall SL5 guitar amplifier is a single ended design.
But it should have a lot of second harmonic, if that's what you want.
Here's the schematic:

I did not check on the schematic for the amp.
For EL34,
Class A SE pentode ratings are lower. Max 250 volts on plate, 11 watts output.
Class B ratings are higher. At 400 volts on the plate, 54 watts output
Class A triode rating even lower output
All output ratings from those days are for 10% distortion.
Regards.

how does an el34 produce only 5 watts?
Reduce the supply voltage. Un-optimize the load impedance.
My lawnmower engine could spin 5,000RPM. But it has been designed to hold a steady 3,400RPM for better economy and life. Engineering!
Oh, so you have seen me drive.Your 90 mph car can easily ride at 5 mph.
Pick a good EL34, probably the last one you will ever need. From another site, "I've attached a schematic for the SL5 which has a fake PI and runs an EL34 on 250VDC so it only puts out 5W." The datasheet says 11W at 10% distortion. They could spec. it at 5W at 3% for the hifi guys.
There is a phase inverter in a push-pull amp. While the Marshall does not need the phase inversion for the second tube there is gain from the phase inverter. So a gain stage was put in at the point where the phase inverter would have been.many thanks all- 350v explains alot- what is a fake PI please
