Hi guys,
I have an old marantz reciever with a lot of features, but for me a very unsatisfactory sound. That is why it has been in the basement for the last couple of years and I've been listening to different class d amps and now the jlh1969 which is to stay for a while.
These diy amps lack the remote, good source selecting and digital input (for the optical from tv). I wonder if it would be a good idea to use the SR5400 as preamp, use its pre outs and then use the jlh1969 as amp. Is it an idea worth at leaat considering before I haul the beast upstairs?

If lugging it upstairs is all it takes, I'd say hell yeah - that's definitely worth a shot. Even if it should turn out unusually noisy (like our 2005 Kenwood was), that could still be tamed using an attenuator.
I came to the same conclusion yesterday, so I brought it up, hooked it together and started it. Sound was okay, noise was there and louder, but still, the whole system was quite listenable. But then I somehow managed to destroy the jlh1969 (need to buy new transistors now), and was left with only the Marantz' amp. I still can't believe how bad the mid-price amps were/are.I guess I'll just have to live with it for a few days.
Having a remote and optical input is nice, though. 🙂
