Hi everyone, I bought this fairly cheaply on ebay because it has a fault.
Disc goes in but does not spin. I've had a look and I first thought a new CDM-12 mechanism was needed but not so sure now as I put a voltage across the drive motor and it spun fine! Could the power supply voltage to the motor be faulty? Doesn't seem likely to me. Or if the laser was faulty would the motor not turn because of it? Before I order a new laser mechanism.... any ideas?
Thanks.

Hi.
With the cover off, the first thing to check is laser output.
If the laser is not working, the disk will not spin.
In the dark, you can just see the laser if you look from the side.
When the sled is put in with no disk, the centre of the laser should move up and down and also red light should be visible.
A working laser is no guarantee however as the output may be weak.

For future reference anyone else needing this part:

STILL THE SAME!
just put in a new laser mechanism but disc not turning.... If it were that voltage wasn't getting to the motor where should I look? or any other suggestions?😕

It could very possibly be a duff laser, even if it is new.
There are a lot of Chinese made versions around which are C**P!
Send it back and say it is duff. Demand a refund.

Made by Philips!
part ref. XD01 (crystal) seems to have some brown gunge on top of it. This could be glue used to keep the rubber tube around it in place? could it be a sign of overheating - failure?
can you test a crystal?
can you test a crystal?
HI DYNOPORT the gunge on the crystal is normal same on my 63 you could try for dodgy conections on the ribons near the cd draw
let me try and hijack the active thread 😉
Sorry to hijack someone else's thread (again), but it is a very similar subject.
I have a problem with my Marantz CD63II KI, in that I have distortion on one channel only. What could be the problem, and how do I fix it? If by fixing it I can upgrade something, then so be it. I am guessing the problem is in the output stage since, since I don't get any distortion on the headphones output.
Thanks
Marko

So, I'm thinking it's the power/voltage supply to the laser? anyone care to point me to which components I should check for this? I'm having difficulty following the service manual layout😱
Help!
How do you test a negative voltage regulator TO 220 of various voltages what can you test them cold or does there need to be power going through? and what are each of the three pins. thanks

Hi
When in the test mode and you select 01 does the laser make any hissing noise if you move the disc with your finger?
If not then it is usually the servo ic TDA1301. You can get these from Nikko

Remove the pcb, remove the crap opamps and replace with something like the LM4562NA or the LME49720HA. While you area at it solder around the output sockets as these can dry joint.

not had time to try this yet but who or what is Nikko? also if it does hiss....?
Nikko is a place you can get rare chips from like the servo or the dac.
If it hisses then the servo is working.

Dynoport,
Go back to the start and look at what Poynton says... 99.9% of problems are down to the pickup.
When you close the tray with no disc the lens should move up and down three times. During this time only the laser should emit light (very very dull red glow).
If it doesn't the next step is to see if the 5 volt LD (Laser diode on) supply is reaching the pickup on I think pin 6 on the ribbon... it's 6 for the CDM12.1.
The disc motor will not spin untill focus is found on a disc.
To test negative regulators you have to measure the output voltage and see if it is correct with reference to the "ground" pin on the reg... I can't say use chassis ground because many circuits "lift" the regulator to give different voltages than the marked value on the device.
