I just got a mail with a crummy paper prayer rug with the face of jesus wearing a crown of thorns on it. The letter seemed to say I should just secretly send off a prayer request and some cashola and they would pray for me and I would be very likely to get what I want. Some language made it seem like something bad might happen if I didn't comply and/or that there was a big rush, I had to do it NOW. There was a picture of a woman who received $46,000, so it had to be ligit, right?

Alas, no, it was someone's money making scam. Some research turned up a preacher named Ewing (from Texas, just like J.R.) and his lawyer who appear to have been treading that grey area between charity and felony for 30+ years, now.
:devilr:

I had a friend in college who (between jobs) scraped together $20 and sent it to someone who promised to give information on how to make money at home stuffing envelopes. For $20 he got a crummy photocopy with the names of 3 pamphlets, each also $20 (and you had to buy all three). He didn't fall for the second scam, but the crummy photocopy was explanation enough how the original guy made money stuffing envelopes....

I actually thought about getting on that bandwagon, in the mid 80's..where most of the adverts like that were run in the back of the ever popular 'enquirer' rag.

Mine would have been something like this, which would still work today:

I drive a brand new Mercedes Benz, every month! I'll show you how to get in on this exciting enterprise! Send $10, with SASE for return.

Etc.

It would have worked......

...enough for me to have driven a new MB every month.....
