Been too long out of here i just can't follow you guys anymore.
( have i ever? i wonder )
Need to slowly start planning for both living room and HT room systems.
Will build the Living room first so now i need to look into what kind of subs could be used.
The system will be stereo ( probably ) focus on music with some movies
and gaming taking place there, but the main focus is really quality of sound.
The first floor is 1 big open room so something like 150 m2
( ~1600 ft2)
With ceilings of ~13ft and 10ft ..so quite voluminous.
I don't need to fill all that perfectly of course, but what i mean is that
i can't have some feeble setup or it i will sound dead.
Reflective hard surfaces all around, so i will get some diffusive/absorptive ceiling tiles .
DIY is requirement of course, i have a fairly good budget but i still favor $$ efficiency.
Size is not really a problem, although it needs to be reasonable.
( aka no 10ft diameter round horns 😛😛 )
So please suggest things i should be looking into.
Mains should be something in the line array type, perhaps a CBT or whatever other pretty tall with lots of drivers thing.
I do enjoy the response of large driving areas.
Main seating will be a U type sectional of 8-10 places right in front of the system in the 13ft ceiling room part.
thanks for your time 🙂

BTW what i researched back then a bit ( quite limited knowledge but i learn and understand quite fast ) was the open baffled stuff mainly
some basic folded horn stuff
dipole subs i think ( dr linkwitz stuff mainly iirc )
i have access to a cnc, have experience with concrete wood and metals

Have you given any thoughts regarding physical dimensions of the project?
Are you looking at lots of small drivers (12" and down), or a few big ones (15" and up)?
Are you looking at lots of small drivers (12" and down), or a few big ones (15" and up)?
Can you place the speakers out into the room? Or are you planning on putting them up against a wall? Carpet on the floor? Or wood? Do you prefer focused pinpoint imaging or the open relaxed more diffuse imaging of a dipole? What percentage of your listening will be in the sweet spot and how much will be background music? How close are bedrooms?
Also, listening distance [Lp] will have a major impact on performance goals since the room's large enough to get around a 6 dB loss for very doubling of distance, which I assume will be THX reference down to at least 20 Hz, i.e. 115 dB/m/Lp.

Unless you have in mind a single "sweet spot" seat*, a basis for great bass** is to have more than 2 subs and located properly. Anybody with experience measuring results will understand.

wow lots of good questions
the only sweet spot required will be most of the seating area which should be in front of the said system
~10 places sectional U shaped thing
doesn't have to be perfect at every seatings but if at least we could get a decent sweetspot within that i would be happy 🙂
Quantity of drivers do not matter... will be based on needs for performance
Size is not very limited, but sure i could do with some decent sized boxes or structures
( like in nothing refridgerator size please )
This is the main room of the house and needs to have some kind of aesthetical appeal to it of course
The usually when something is designed/built for performance, it almost always looks good !
Having multiple subs ( maximum would probably be 4 seperate encloser ) no prob with that either ! the actual room is around 22'X25' i'll make a drawing later
They will not be against the wall for sure
was planning to setup the system both side of the main screen
which should be " floating" at around 36"~48" from the wall ...
So the loudspearker system could be anywhere between 12" and 60" from the wall
and or occupy all that space 🙂
as for the WAF , if they look good ( i am usually pretty good at making things looks good ) and perform decently, i will face no limitations 🙂
I'll see if i have pictures of the current state of the living room and make a plan .
thanks all 🙂

Here are a few quick 3d and plan with dimensions
the red square would be the " ideal " available space for the system
( including under behind the TV ..prob ~ 65" screen )
I have no problem placing subs elsewhere around the perimeter and i can add power outlets as required ( i did all the elctricity of the house, i made it so i can easily add as needed from the room under : )

and the current state of the room
( i am currently starting the interior finish .... )
walls will be alum composite sheets and porcelain tiles
floors porcelains tiles
stairs are quartz
ceiling to be decided but that's my only chance to diffuse
and absorb
Please note the many windows, all are around 8X8 size .. i am pretty sure
i'll be getting some nasty stuff back from those
( but also need to keep in mind that we don't want to break them with the bass thank you ! ahha )

we home educating the kids so please don't mind the mess and tons of stuff 🙂
damn way too many posts apologies !
forgot to mention i think that i own a 5X10 cnc
and have good experience with concrete casting
fairly at east with wood and metal working
access to laser cut alum/steel parts also
cheers 🙂

Very cool house, congratulations. Am I right that you are not just asking about subs?
You will definitely want the ceiling tiles with sound absorbing characteristics. And hopefully a rug between the listening position and the speakers. Getting the speakers out into the room 3 feet or so is huge, thats great news. In many rooms the size and reflectivity severely limits the performance of certain speaker types more than others. (directivity). I would say that in that room, with acoustic ceiling tiles and a rug you would not necessarily be limited to a certain speaker type, so it's going come down to your preference. Especially if you can draw some curtains over some of the windows when you listen seriously. Me, I like horns and my SET amp. Vocals are clear and easy to hear what they're saying with the directivity yet a velvety human tone. I would do that, but there's no one right answer for you. Huge line arrays would look amazing there. Have fun! Craig
My system if you are interested :
the "SPIEKER" my almost 20 year prototype finally done

with that kind of space i'd be tempted to rig loudspeaker suspension from overhead provided the supporting structure would take it. do you rent or own?
although not DIY i would hang two of these per side Yorkville
and support them with on of these Yorkville
with a small mixer and a couple of DI's sessions of Rockband will take on a whole new dimension!
but you've got a CNC mill so who knows you can maybe make anything...

or you could go old school large
but the kids might camp out in those....
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

cspieker : i will look into your setup ! looks awesome!
we have motorized window shades just not installed yet ( waiting for interior finish )
I will ask about every part of the system in time for sure
but for now i wanted to have a look at subwoofers
Accoustic tiles for sure ! i was thinking i could use the CNC on some foam
and make this kind of diffusor :
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/1LwAAOSw9GhYlFgZ/s-l300.jpg
like the RPG stuff ..thats' quite easy to do on the cnc
Unsure about carpet on floor though, but i might think about it for inside the sectional sofas area
Turk : rent ? i just posted 3d pics of the design of the house and you think i build and rent it ?? you funny 😉
thanks for the adivces and pictures, but DIY please and those old school things are quite FUGLY and not really my style of things
thanks for sharing !

The trouble with asking for ultimate designs is that they are often refrigerator sized, fugly, and there are a lot of wildly different options to choose from
Pinterest might be the best option to find something that works, then you can work backwards to find out how good they are, what's involved in buying/building them etc
Also think about how complex you want the electronics side of things - do you want conventional speakers + active subwoofers that you simply plug in to a surround receiver or are you fine with 10 way DSP + amplifier type complex setups?

i once rented a loft place in Peterborough Ont where the landlord gave me permission to renovate/redesign the space but stopped me at building in wall loudspeakers.
the reason i put links to the Yorkville cabs was to open up the possibility of a "flown/suspended" speaker system, and yeah the old school stuff is fugly but is the counter point of sleek and modern, just trying to define what your looking for?

Sure i get what you mean Turk !!
I am not after looks though, performance is first priority ,
but through my years of living, i've noticed that when things are well designed for performance they tend to look nice automatically.
oohms : i am not asking for ultimate but rather stuff to look at study and consider for n now .
don't wish to study 10 options, so getting it down to a few main options would be quite nice at this point
I plan on using a PC into DSP into diy amps
not a fan of analogue stuff, nor am i fan of passive crossover and their complexity
few good options notably the one coming from a member here that's been working for ages on a DSP crossover /dac / connections
If i have to shoot for what i was thinking as far as the system for now which would help figure out options :
- very tall line arrays ( now seem to be some very good stuff with the curved one ? )
probably using long planars and good mids
- some big box woofers, could be dipoles or folded horns ( that's what i don't know about mostly )
could even be long tube stuff
i mean so much as happ since i last looked and read around here, must be tons of new designs and advancements i do not know about
