M-Audio AP192 soundcard

Does anyone have any experience using M-audio Audiophile 192 PCI soundcard to play hi-res (24/192) music files using its SPDIF output to feed external DAC?

I am thinking about buying one, but the manual is not clear whether the 192kHz sample rate is available though the SPDIF output or only through the internal DAC.

Thanks

I am thinking about buying the cheapest Dell PC for $280, then install the soundcard, then from the soundcard to my Opus DAC through SPDIF.

Could you guys tell me about your setup:
What kind of PC are you using, what software do you use to play the audio files, file format, DAC, etc?

How can you tell that you are actually getting 24/192k output and not, for example, 96k when playing 24/192 audio files?

Thanks

I was using a Intel Celeron 430 ona DG33Tl mobo with 2 GB ram , Windows 7 and WinXP Home. My prog of choice is either foobar or Albumplayer (the later suited to use with my 17" ELO touchscreen) I was using the analog out for most of the time but have used the SPDIF when it was performing HTPC duties as a passthrough. You force 192 by going into the M-Audio control panel and telling it to do 192 then going into Windows audio panel and ticking the 192 box. Foobar can upsample to 24 is you tell it too. All my files are CD Rips from EAC into FLAC.

Dont forget to use ASIO!!

HaLo6,

Pardon my ignorance - I heard ASIO mentioned a lot in many soundcards specs.

From Wikipedia, I learned it is some kind of audio I/O protocol, and it bypasses the Windows stuff in order to get bit perfect output to the soundcard.

Could you explain to me how can I set Foobar to use ASIO?

Thanks!

No just select that plugin in Foobar, AP192 should be set then, you can confirm its using ASIO by trying to play a windows sound on top of the music, if you hear a windows sound something is wrong, if you dont then you are shooting out bit perfect 1's and 0's. No with ASIO all your mixer functions are disabled so you will need an external method to alter volume!
