My Luxman L1 developed distortion. I'm kind of hoping someone is familiar with the L1 and might have an idea what area to look at that might be common to cause this.

L1 is very flaky once it gets old. You may want to refresh the solder joints a bit and change out the caps.
Also check the bias transistor mounted on the sink, sometimes it loses contact with the sink. Ditto for bias pots. Tend to lose all contact after some time and need changing.
Finally, check the bass and treble pots, they are in the feedback loop and may cause strange happenings when they go crackly.
I do have a L1A service manual and believe it is only slightly different from the L1, drop me a PM with your email ID and I'll send it to you. {Please do not post email ID on the thread}
