Looking to build a phono stage

I am about to finish the build of my TT and need a phono stage. I would like to be able to use with a variety of carts. What pcbs are out there? I have found the following

What would you suggest?

Tube or SS? Budget you're looking at? MM only or MM/MC? 🙂

The phono stage is for MC only. I wasn't too impressed by it. Nobody knows what Pearl 2 or PhonoEnd will sound like since they are not out yet. I just built the Aikido phono amp with 6N1P tubes and like it alot. Just build your own MC step up.

The Phono Stage from Peter Daniel has proven quite amazing in the setups I have listened to it in. It is for low output MC's with low internal impedance only which is fine by me. I have used it with a Shelter 5000, Shelter 901, and Denon 103R and it has acquit itself nicely against some 5-7.5k units in my presence and absolutely stomps an EAR 834P Deluxe which is a well regarded and reviewed unit.

To top it all off...it does it for $200 as I am running it off of batteries and used some component substitutions to bring the price down a bit.

Best,

Chris

The input audio signal is driven by an cascode input 6072 section tubes followed by an RIAA passive EQ circuit and another 6072 output tube. The filament circuitry from the power supply supplies the input and output tubes separately. The L3 Phono board itself will be powered by the Audio Note M2 (6X5 & ECL82) Power supply.
The L3 Phono Stage Kit boasts an overall gain of 40db (100x voltage gain) and is ideally suited to driving a line pre-amplifier or an integrated amplifier. An input impedance of 47K makes it ideal for a Moving magnet cartridge.

Take a close look at this phono stage inDiscreet Phono Pre-amplifier [English] is probably one of the most underrated Phono Stages I know. I have built one 2004 and have not yet found anything else that has made me want to change.

I have tested it against various Lehmann Black Box, ARS Mini Basis Phono, Linn Linto after each test has the person who had the more expensive phono stage replaced their phono stage to the TNT InDiscreet phono stage.

The main disadvantage is that you can not use an MC cartridge directly but it is easy to do with a Stepup.

One thing I've noticed is that TNT InDiscreet phono stage getting better if you use quality components, no small change but big as you'd expect of them.

Here's the one I'm currently building. I haven't listened to too many phono stages, but this one is extremely sweet, detailed, accurate, and lets the sound of different tubes shine through.

Jim Hagerman's Octal Cornet

And the Schematic w/Parts List

Be warned though, its not made for the faint of heart. Its a very open phono stage and will let any problems you have with grounding, wiring, and just about everything else shine right through.

I made a PCB for the phono section and handwired the power supply in a separate case.
