Hello everyone. I thought I would try here to get some info on the poly or (mixed poly) woofers out there. I have had in the past (Dynaudio) speakers that used poly woofers two sets of them. The thing I liked best about them was the voices but, the music was way to dull and very dark sounding or should I say laid back. Well I am out to help a friend of mine with his two way speaker project. I really have no helpful hints because I am a paper cone driver fan. So Is there a very good built mixed poly or poly cone out there that doesn't sound plastic or dull? Please help me! If you have any helpful hints that woud be great. Thanks Mr Daniel

SB Acoustics make great value poly cones, but my favorite looking are the Seas woven poly's, no idea how they sound tho

The poly cones don't sound dull, unless person building
speakers with these, want's it so or does not know what he
is supposed to do with them. There are more than a few out
there with poly cones. Peerless and SBA are good and not
overpriced.
Check the FR manufacturer supplied for the Dynaudios.
Acoustic roll off at high frequencies appears to be already
low passed, and these are measurements without XO. When
one is not carefull with filtering this kind of driver, dull
sounding speaker would be no surprise.

I agree with you 100%. I guess I am just use to using paper drivers which is so much more diffrent then the poly cones. ( Like apples to oranges you could say). Also with the dyanudio's I wish I could have heard them with the right set up? ( I did call the company and tell them that my drivers were sounding over lapped ( working or pushing againest or fighting agianest one another if this makes sense?) They told me that was the way they made them so I sold them. Well again thanks for your help. Mr. Daniel
P.S. Maybe one day I will buy a used pair of the dynaudios I had and redo the crossovers and wiring and upgrade the binding post? Well I have been thinking about this for years now? Mr. Daniel

By the way which poly cone do you use? and what type of tweeter do you use with it? Thanks Mr. Daniel

Me too. They look really sweet. I wonder who they sound? Mr. Daniel

Nevermind the binding posts. They are never an issue.
There is no such thing as sound of plastics or paper
or metal cones or whatever. I have made enough speakers
with different cone materials. They always sounded the
way I thought they should be. Transparency above all.
I use Dynaudio drivers, bass, mid and tweeter not because
they are so special. Nonsense, there is so many fine drivers
nowadays. I bought mine for a reasonable price and I like
the cool looks of one piece molded poly cones with the
addition of not having to build notch filters.
You can use whatever brand and materials you prefer and
get excellent results.

I sure do enjoy your point of view on cone materials 😀. Such a great out look on speakes it's finally good to hear someone say this 🙂. Again thanks for the info and the encouragement. To bad you live on the other side of the world! Good Day 😎 Mr. Daniel
Mr Daniel,
I will quote a great guy, Bob Ross, who did a series " The Joy of Painting"
showing folks how easily great looking paintings can be done.

Confusion on "poly sounding dull" goes back to the '80's with the first cheap poly cones. (actually white in those days). They did sound like a limp noodles. Materials have come a long long way. Notice Linkwitz switched from the Mg cones to the Seas poly. They are all "filled" with various things and the cone shape matters a lot.
I am thinking of my next build to be two "easy" drivers. My current build is two cheap very hard to use drivers ( SilverFlute and Dayton) So, SB poly cone and Trans lab ceramic tweeter. I am not in love with any of the metal cones I have built and the lovely Seas reed paper was not easy to tame.

tvrgeek the Satori and the trans lab would make a great combo, was thinking the same. they'd look nice together too, the white flecks of the SB cone and the white tweeter etc.

Aright good to know. By the way the SB Acoustics came out with a metal cone? I wonder why they are now making metal cones? Thanks for your helpful insight. Mr. Daniel.
SBA made an 8" cone a while ago and also a subwoofer. I'm guessing the new ones started life as OEM for Revel (black anodized).
I have the Seas U18's PP Curv Cones with Seas tweeters in my 20 litre 2-ways, the woofers are far from dull, they sound fantastic especially for the price. They are well built and look great. They would be fantastic in floorstanders.

Cool 😀. Thanks for info on the curv. poly cones. Great to hear they don't sound dull or boring. I will have to have a look at them? Mr. Daniel

Wow I haven't heard that name Revel in years? Are they still alive? oo Yes I looked at buying a pair 15 years ago but, Glade I didn't and have been getting deeper and deeper into (diy ) the last 12 years. Mr. Daniel
