Less sound left channel Sony STR-DB830 QS

Hello to all and thanks in advance for all your help.

I own this amp and now it as a problem.

(sorry about my English (I'm from Portugal))

The volume from the front left channel is a little lower than the front right channel.

Plus, it seems to me that it only appends if I switch to more than two speakers. It seems that if I choose 2ch stereo mode, mono movie or another 2 speakers mode the sound looks good but if I shitch it to whatever surround, cinema studio or any 5.1 speekers mode, the left front channel as lower sound.

The balance is centered. The speaker cables have same length. Thus I opened the amp and resolder all the cold solder I've found (according to what I've been reading the forum).

I don't know what's causing this and elsewhere to look.

Can you please help?

Do a soundfield clear 1st

Procedure below from a STR-DB930 (similar unit)

While depressing the SOUND FIELD MODE button, press the
power button to turn on the main power. The message S.F
Initialize appears and initialization is performed.

Thanks to both 🙂

Ylli I've inspected all boards and connections but I'll check later if there is still something dirty inside.

Deadpool I'll also check this procedure when arriving home but I did the long press power button to demonstration menu witch I think would reset the amplifier.

I didn't wrote earlier but I've also switched speakers from left to right to see it it were the speakers but they are OK.
I changed the inputs also from TV, box, DVD again without success.
I've also measured one or another component inside the amp but without conclusions (maybe I didn't check the correct ones...)

Anyway, I will keep trying all your suggestions.
Thanks

Probably bad contact in the corresponding protection relay as suggested earlier. The unit is no longer a spring chicken, stuff like that happens. Finding a new equivalent (or one that can be made to work e.g. by cutting off excess pins) is often a better way to go than trying to clean up the old one, which is just as much work and may not be successful if the contacts are burned rather than just tarnished (in which case a strip of paper drenched in contact cleaner could be used to revive them).

There are menus for setting speaker volumes on those STR series. I own a similar unit. Have You checked them ? Find the relay and connect the speaker wire before the relay, in order to rule out the relay, if and only if the channels are working OK, or measure for DC on speaker terminals first.

Hi again and thanks for all your help.

I've tried resoldering the ry501 Front CH A and ry502 Front CH B protection relays without any success.

I must try replace them.

Here's another question for you - if the problem would be from one protection relay (speakers on CH A for example ry501) the sound shouldn't be alright if i put the speakers on the other channel (CH B ry502)?
I'm asking because I've done this experiment and I get same problem.

Meanwhile I've read that the culprit could also be the ic501 (Pc2581v). What do you think about this one also?

A strange thing is when I turn the balance all the way to the left channel I still hear sound on the right one (just lowers a little bit) and that's the only way I can level both left and right channels.

You can always try jumping over the relay contacts with some wire if you want to rule them out.

Does this unit have pre-outs? (We used to have a DB840 many years ago but I don't remember much of it.) If so, verify whether channels are balanced there. Being able to tell roughly where the problem is would help a lot.

So the problem is always present, stereo or surround?

A single bad solder joint or duff resistor (or maybe coupling cap, including inside feedback) would be quite sufficient to cause you all this grief, and Sony equipment from this vintage is not exactly the last word in soldering quality (the minidisc decks are a bit problematic, for example). Thorough inspection of the boards may prove useful.

I don't think the µPC2581V has anything to do with it.
